During today’s GDC session on Epic’s Unreal Engine, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang dropped in as a special guest to announce NVIDIA’s next high performance video card, the GeForce GTX Titan X. In order to capitalize on the large audience of the Unreal session while not spoiling too much ahead of NVIDIA’s own event in 2 weeks – the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference – NVIDIA is playing coy with details on the product, but they have released a handful of details along with a product image. lol, it probably will.

I'm waiting for the GTX version with likely 6GB RAM if the price isn't too ridiculous and will get one of those super-silent ones like my current MSI 780 Ti GAMING card. I paid £500 for mine and I can tell you I don't want to pay much more for the next top card.

Can it please glow like that in a machine because I think everyone would want a cooler that looks like it does in this picture. 12gb of VRAM is also pretty slick though I think we all were expecting that.

I think the question though is more of when the gaming variants of the chip will come out next and what are going to be the total details since its up in the air how many actual cores it contains compared to last round since that could make all the difference.

I like that color but it would be cool if you had multiple choices which could be switched via the Control Panel. Hell, they can do it with lighted keyboards. Why not video cards. It probably wouldn't add $1 to the cost of the card. I would choose blue to keep with my current theme.

6+8 pin power connectors on the reference card, no surprise really considering how efficient Maxwell has proven to be.

The UE4 Kite demo looks great as well.

That's good for 300 watts and should be more than enough. I'm thinking it will be a 250 watt card but who knows. I do know that if it is a 250 watt Maxwell card it will be a beast. :)

I'd like to see this card next to a titan black to compare the cooler styling. I'm sure our @W1zzard would be happy to oblige in his review. :D

That's optimistic. GTX 980 reference is a 225w and throttles at GPU intense workload just to keep power draw and temps in check. Non-refences designs hit 290watts. Previous Titan were limited, this one should be more so. Given the aim of maxwell is to keep power draw in check.

Nvidia all but confirmed that GM 200 will be stripped out of FP64 (probably in line with GM 204's 1:32, maybe 1:24 at a pinch), which would help with power budget since double precision is a power hog (the inability to turn off the compute shaders in AMD's current architecture seems to be the main reason for their overall power budget). GK 210, with its doubled shader cache, double module register capacity, and enhanced double precision throughput was developed in tandem with Maxwell, so this would seem to have been planned from the outset.

So, Titan X as the halo product with 8Gbit/8Gbps Samsung memory and 12GB of VRAM to entice the rendering/content creation crowd and the benchmarking crowd, and a combination of full/salvage parts with 6GB of 7 or 8GHz memory IC's for the gamers.
What are the odds that some game dev drops a 6+GB HD texture pack for a sponsored game just before the card launches?

Unlikely. GK 110 is a more inefficient architecture for pure gaming thanks to the SFUs on board. As far as power consumption is concerned for the high end, who cares? We've been told that power usage is immaterial since the 7970 arrived. As for power limiting, that might depend upon what the competition brings to the table. Without double precision, a large framebuffer doesn't offer much in the way of product segmentation, so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that Nvidia offer a dual BIOS/high fan profile for the top part.

I know right, wouldn't that be epic to have glowing cards in our color scheme without having to do heavy modding! I mean I would dig it especially if this cooler does glow because imagine seeing one of these in a case like the DeepCool Steam Castle, pretty epic right! I am a big fan of coolers now showcasing themselves with some bling than ever before mostly because it really adds something to make a computer special for users especially seeing how LAN events and PC gaming is shooting up.

My guestimate of 250 watt Titan X is 94 watts more Average and 66 watts more Peak to be put towards performance than reference 980.
The point is moot to me though because I wouldn't buy a Titan AnyLetter card.

Tom's Hardware - Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 And 980 Review: Maximum Maxwell

Stress Test Power Consumption
If the load is held constant, then the lower power consumption measurements vanish immediately. There’s nothing for GPU Boost to adjust, since the highest possible voltage is needed continuously. Nvidia's stated TDP becomes a distant dream. In fact, if you compare the GeForce GTX 980’s power consumption to an overclocked GeForce GTX Titan Black, there really aren’t any differences between them. This is further evidence supporting our assertion that the new graphics card’s increased efficiency is largely attributable to better load adjustment and matching.
The values above have potential consequences for the everyday operation of these graphics cards, as they represent what can be expected when running performance-hungry compute-oriented applications optimized for CUDA and OpenCL.
That's not the only offering that makes a good impression, though. Nvidia's reference GeForce GTX 980 does well too, as long as you don’t focus on the idle power measurement. This isn't the same result as custom models with higher power targets (up to 300 Watts for the GTX 980), though, when compute-based stress tests are run. A taxing load just doesn't give Maxwell room for its optimizations to shine.
Note that the GeForce GTX 980's stress test power consumption is actually a few watts lower than the gaming result. This is likely due to throttling that kicks in when we hit the thermal ceiling.
Finally, let’s take a look at the detailed measurements. The much smaller load adjustments are illustrated graphically below. Pay particular attention to the reference card’s small drops when it hits the thermal limit.

Just incase you didn't read it W1zzards test Peak and Average are done using a game

  • Average: Metro: Last Light at 1920x1080, representing a typical gaming power draw. Average of all readings (12 per second) while the benchmark was rendering (no title/loading screen). In order to heat up the card, we run the benchmark once without measuring power consumption.
  • Peak: Metro: Last Light at 1920x1080, representing a typical gaming power draw. Highest single reading during the test.

Performance will be better just that a game or program that uses more GPU will yield more power usage. DX11 vs DX12 hype. If a reference cooler cant handle the thermal load on a GTX 980, Nvidia will have to resort to the same limiting tricks it applied to the Titan/Black. Disable boost and lower clock rate lock power bios and maybe more.

Yet, it'll probably still sell pretty damn well, so what does that say about the enthusiast community who are the ones to buy a card like this?

I've said this before somewhere else, but there are alot of factors that will keep me a million miles away from this card.

performance = likely not much more than the 980, unfortunatly, if it's not double or triple the performance of the 980 the next thing comes into play
price = rumored at 1.3k the current 295x2 is less that half that, enough said there. 970 tri SLI possibly way better and cost less, 980 sli possibly way better and cost less.

I'll probably be holding out till the end of the year as I typically do, and buy the best price vs performance card out at the time.
However, if the numbers and gb amount are not on par with my expectations I might actually sit this one out.

The more we fuel them with money for mediocre increases, the more and more they will become like intel.

We totally want to spend all the money over again for a marginal synthetic increase.
