Price, it's so much cheaper to get into than last gen. That would be my sole guess on how it was done. Also they have been very aggressive on combos with games and such. It's nice to be able to get the console ready to go with a game. I know for my PS2 I bought it, borrowed a game to play from a friend and didn't even have the money for a memory card so I just left the system on till I did. And my PS3 was too expensive to afford to buy a game as well, so I just played PS2 games on it for a while. PS4 game with GTA 5 and Last of Us for the cost of what was normally the console price, made it an easy choice.

Price, but also gaming is a much more accepted phenomenon in general - the target market is getting bigger every year. Gaming is accessible and known to virtually everyone now. PC platform also shows growth and is diversifying further.

Another big thing is that Xbox One had a somewhat shaky launch. People generally picked PS4 over X1, and X360 owners have also switched (not all of them, but some) while the other way around has happened far less.

I remember how some of my friends bought a PS4 at launch just to give a middle finger to Microsoft and their bad policies

Yep, but 'protest buying' is only part of that ;) The PS4 also offers more in terms of hardware and the price point is similar. Everyone knew beforehand that the PS4 would give more bang for buck. And they chose right: in many games X1 gives you 900p where PS4 gives 1080p. Some games have a different frame rate (Dying Light- ducks to 25 fps on X1 and steady 30 fps on PS4). And MS has even worked on freeing up more resources for developers in the X1, which speaks volumes so early in its life.

From what I've seen, X1 is fighting back by offering a larger library, in part through the ID@Xbox program. Acquisition of Elite Dangerous, Minecraft, etc. Those are good moves.

*Elite doesn't allow itself to get written correctly. I keep ending up with a :D when I try to :)

Elite Dangerous will ship on PS4. it's just a time exclusive deal with Microsoft.
