Should I stay with GTX970 or switch to a R9 290x?

OP has bourght a GFX 970 which is a great card, no dubt about that, so is R9 290X with aftermarket cooler.

He is playing Skyrim with a lot of mods, that takes a lot, but he is playing on a analog screen in resolution 1650x1080, so no matter which card he has, that should be enough to do that with out any problems

That's the problem, it's modded a.k.a non optimized part of the game.
I doubt crazily modded Skyrim would use >3.5GB VRAM at 1050p. But say it's totally extreme mods, extra 512MB on 290x won't help you much either. 290x 8GB maybe...

If you are modding like nuts you're going to have other limiting factors than VRAM, tbh.

Exactly. I can choke my CPU and GPU with mods on Morrowind before the VRAM could come even close to being filled.
