I discovered this game this weekend and love it! Though I'd share. This is the game that SimCity should have been. None of that multiplayer BS shoved down your throat, just fun city building on HUGE maps. The best part is the game is only $30, and it just came out.

If you loved classic SimCity, you'll love this game. The Wife got somewhat annoyed with me this weekend because I ignored her too much playing this game...

I'm digging it so far, the little annoyances so far (like emptying Garbage and Cemeteries/bulldozing abandoned buildings*) are just way less they I've experienced in any other city building game, and the building aspect matches or exceeds the others.

* Plus Workshop mods can automate processes like that, as long as you're not concerned with Steam Achievements, so even those complaints are largely mitigated.

Definitely a must buy for city builders. I feel that this is what SimCity 2013 should have been. It seems to play similarly to SimCity 4 which is definitely not a bad thing at all. Far, FAR better than Cities XL and the like.

I've found it to be highly addictive so be careful if you have other things to do D: (e.g. university...)

Cities: XXL comes later this year too.

Cities XXL is out already and it is the same bulls**t like Cities XL. They have not touched anything! Just re-branded.

Cities: Skylines is a really nice game. I like it very much!!!
Pre-ordered it and haven't regretted it for a second.

I am this close to buying it. It looks amazing. I'm afraid it will be a wasted purchase though, because I couldn't play even the original Simcity properly. I couldn't do anything more advanced than connecting a coal mine and power plant with rails in Transport Tycoon. I lack any fragment of strategic thinking and creativity :D

Damn, if this gameplay feels like SimCity 4, that's one huge compliment! It's now officially on my list.

If you think that you would really enjoy this game but feel a little lost then there are guides with tips out there that could help you get an idea how things work together.

The nice part is that for some of the more technical stuff (like building freeway interchanges, which I personally have no tolerance or nack for) you can either build it separately outside of your actual city or you can grab a bunch of them from the steam workshop and use them right from the regular interface menu and boom, instant cloverleaf.

Additionally bulldozing things isn't needlessly punishing, which is also nice.

This is my game of the year so far, one of the best games i've played in years. I wish there was a nice easy way to upgrade roads and also the omission of terraforming is unforgivable but those are my only 2 gripes.

For Unity Engine this is awesome, the graphics are really pleasing to the eye. When you use one of the 1st person mods you just realise how big your cities are.

It's basically Sim City 4 modernised and that ain't a bad thing at all. The way it works is you get one plot of land and then you can buy up adjacent squares up to a total of 25 with a mod.

Steam Workshop support just gave you a free dessert with your main course. Auto bulldoze abandoned buildings is a must and there are some really useful highway off ramps and larger capacity buildings like a larger school.

Much easier to manage traffic in this game, the traffic is miles better than Sim City although if you don't plan well you end up with backed up crossroads.

For an expansion they could add in day night cycles, terraforming in city building mode so you can level terrain if you want (even if this cost a lot in game i wouldn't mind), add in more variety of terrain, maybe some weather effects and some scenarios and disasters. Overall though it is a great foundation for a city builder. It doesn't need these things, it would just add a bit more variety.

I paid £13 for a CD key and it is worth at least double that imo.

Yeh they're pretty much my gripes too. The widening of roads is annoying if there is a placed building in the way but at least the developers added in a 'relocation' tool which does cost a little in-game currency but is far, FAR cheaper than bulldozing and plopping the building again.

Terraforming is the big one though. But that could maybe come in an expansion or update.

-----------------------------

I've just maxed my first square and am expanding into some of the surrounding ones. I'm having to re-do most of my highway system though as it seems putting in a metro didn't reduce traffic like I though it would (even when I massively increased its budget/funding).

Also something I've noticed is that budgeting seems a little less complicated than in SC4. I've found that it is a little easier to keep a surplus.

Can anyone tell me what is that "login to Paradox account" thing in the main menu? What the hell is Paradox account and why would I want one?

Also, what is this Steam Workshop? Is it a website I can download mods from? How do I do that? Clicking on anything in the list on the right side of the menu doesn't do anything.

@Octopuss I don't know about the Paradox account, but selecting a mod from the list in Steam Workshop SHOULD automatically activate that mod with the game. At least it has worked like that for Skyrim and Total War games.

Paradox is the publisher, if you log in you'll get a Plaza to use in your game, but it's not required.

Steam Workshop is where mods that actually modify the game (disables achievements by default), and those that are more esthetic in nature (building assets or premade highway interchanges and the like). The list on the side of the screen in the game are just the ones you have downloaded/want to turn on or off, to actually get them you have to go through the community hub/workshop in Steam itself.

What Plaza? What's that? lol

Clicking on anything in that list doesn't do anything, and I definitely don't have any mods installed, so I don't know...

A plaza is like a park. It's just a unique park structure for creating an account and logging in.

Yeah the list will be empty unless you go onto Steam workshop (either the application itself or the website) and select mods or assets you want to add to the game. They'll auto download if you subscribe to them and will show up in the section of the screen when you relaunch.
