Hello gals&guys

I'm looking at a friends laptop and I hear the fan spinning and the power LED on, however I don't get a display on the main monitor, nor if I hook up the VGA. I tried a combination of the FN hotkeys, as well as windows+P for changing the displays.

No luck.

At one point a fan started to speed up extremely rapidly inside, then went back to idle RPM.

Any ideas?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

try re-seating ram.

I work in a PC store. I see alot of laptops like this. Usually its the GPU on the board thats gone. Sometimes a reflow works. If not, then a new motherboard is needed. (worst case scenario)

My wife's laptop had the same symptom. It turn out that the integrated GPU has died. Everything else was working fine. The laptop would start, but have no output. The reason was a huuuge dust ball, which could've been prevetned had I opened it for a clean up earlier.

One thing you could try with it, is take out the battery, uplug the cable, hold the power button for 5 sec. and turn it on with only AC power, no battery. It helped me when flashing the BIOS. It just wouldn't do it with the battery in. Not exactly relevant, but won't hurt a shot.

Connect a monitor\HDTV in to the HDMI port if available and see if any thing comes on then. If some thing does come on then the panel would look like it had gone and not the video card.

Hey IZKoce, I tried the second part but haven't checked the inside. That's next on my list, just have to go purchase a tool set.

AsRock, I did try this as well and no luck. The laptop had VGA only :(

I'm guessing the video card circuitry is toast on the laptop's motherboard. I'll be sure to post a reply if I find a solution :) Thanks again everybody :)

Figured it out guys :p

It was the RAM needing reseating. I ripped them sticks out then chucked them back in. Display showed up almost right as soon as I powered it on. :D

Anyone know why re-seating the RAM can fix the display exactly? Seems like such a weird cross of entities that are dependent on each other :s
