I have the Asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0 paired with a fx-9370 processor. currently i have 8gb mushkin pc3-12800 ram. I want to upgrade it to at least 16gb. I have found a 16gb corsair vengeance ddr3 2133 (4x4gb) on craigslist. Is this going to work out fine with my board? am i going to get the full 2133 speed, or will it drop it down to 1866? Some places im reading online recommend that i got with only 2 sticks instead of the 4.

this is the set im talking about http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/sop/4933965488.html

I personally would never buy RAM on Craigslist unless I personally new the seller.

To know if RAM will work with your motherboard, the best place to look is on your motherboard's website at the RAM QVL. The QVL lists RAM the maker has tested and verifies will work with your specific board. There are too many RAM makers and models for them to test them all so you don't have to buy listed RAM, but do need to buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM and I don't see any 11-11-11-27 listed RAM.

I would recommend going with G.Skill my self. I see a lot of issues with the 2x8 sticks of corsair/kingston and the FX platforms. Just my 2cents.

2 sticks will be easier on the memory controller than 4 sticks. There is a chance for greater success with 2 sticks running at a higher frequency than four. That being said, I'm not saying that 4 sticks won't work.

Also they are asking too much on Craigslist. Buy new: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007611 600006050 600006142 600006072
Agreed too,
2x8 its better option, less power drain [i know that are like 1.5V, but save all the power you can, ]

I would recommend going with G.Skill my self. I see a lot of issues with the 2x8 sticks of corsair/kingston and the FX platforms. Just my 2cents.
Agreed also mushkin has several options on 1866/2133 kits,

No. According to your motherboard specs here, that motherboard only supports up to 1866MHz. Faster RAM "should" work, but its speed will be toggled down to the maximum allowed by the FSB.

If your board supports it. But with 16Gb already, you will only see that on benchmarks, not in real-world scenarios. When it comes to RAM, more trumps faster any day of the week. If you overclock, you risk stability.

This isn't a skt478 or 775 machine, the FSB doesn't limit the memory clock. In fact this machine doesn't have a "FSB" has it is known which is another thing. The CPU is rated for 1866Mhz but the IMC probably supports a bunch of memory dividers above and below that. A great example is how my i7 3820 is designed to run DDR3-1600 but it runs 2133Mhz memory just fine. With respect to the FSB itself, such a bus doesn't exist anymore. Generally speaking, this is usually referred to as the base clock (or bclk). However it's not outside the realm of possibility for this CPU the OP has to run 2133Mhz without any changes to CPU/NB (IMC) voltage and the only thing that would (probably) need to be done is a higher memory divider set and the memory latencies adjusted.

beat me to it 2133 should be as simple as booting at 1600 or 1866 and enabling XMP

I think just upgrading from 8gb to 16gb will give me a significant boost :) . Now to tackle the problem of the cpu overheating and shutting down on me... for some reason my h100i is just not doing it. I played a few hours of battlefield hardline last night and the machine just shut down on me. Eventually it wouldnt even boot windows anymore. changed the thermal paste but still it idles at 51°c

Couple things here.
If you have never owned/run a 9xxx series FX chip before, you have no idea how hot these get. Forget air cooling completely, it'll throttle even at stock frequencies.
Your H100 should be adequate providing you take the vcore off of auto and set it manually so it doesn't overvolt.
When I say adequate, that means for stock clocks. If you plan on overclocking, a full blown high end WC system WILL be required.
As for ram, avoid Kingston, and avoid 4 sticks. Both have known issues with the FX's.
Speed wise, 2133 will work, but very seldom will you see a good fast FX rig running that speed. The sweet spot for these is between 1800-1900.

Still shouldn't be the case, check your mounting brackets and make sure it's contacting the CPU.

Also helps to make sure the cooler fans are spinning properly.

it will default to lower spec because the chips memory controllers native speed for memory is 1600 or 1866, but shouldn't be any problem going into bios and setting it manually.

The 9xxx series are high leakage chips. They run even hotter than the 8xxx series chips.

I tweaked a few things here and there, cleaned it out all nice. Fell to 41°c idle. We will see how it does under load. I would have stuck with the 8350 like the machine i sold to my friend that i had before, but i found this rig on craigslist for $600. I got the sabertooth mobo, fx9350, gtx 760 2gb, 750w corsair psu, 1tb hd, 8gb mushkin ram, and a decent case. Some 15 year ood kid was selling it to upgrade to an i7. All this stuff was bearly 6 months old because he even gave me the receipt.
