Well, the brick and mortar stores were probably cutting into their profits. Honestly, I only thought they had two physical stores. This should help them with long term survival with their biggest competitor.

Really I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy stores eventually closed too. There is so much purchasing online now, I don't know how THEY stay profitable. I used to buy all my movies from them. Nope, not now. They are too expensive compared to careful shopping online, looking for discounts and sales and free shipping of movie dvd's.

They even had/have stores here in Canada. The biggest reason I never went was prices. They were always one of the highest.

I didn't know that Tiger Direct even had any brick and mortar stores. It's a wonder to me how any electronics stores still have physical retail locations because of the added overhead. I have bought everything from Amazon and Newegg for years and years. I guess for customers that don't have a lot of knowledge about tech then brick and mortar might serve them better but they will usually pay more for their electronics than shopping online.

This is no surprise. It was even competing with itself. It was not uncommon to visit their store and find and actually compare products, then go online and order it cheaper. If they keep their on-line presence it will be a plus for many because if all the local locations close, many will not have to pay sales tax.

Looks like you won't be rid of them then, since store near Miami is supposed to stay open, I think. You may see alot more of them refurbs sold as new now!

They started in Miami. I remember when they were a kiosk. ALWAYS been jerks to deal with.

Had Blockbuster done this sooner, they might have been able to compete with Netflix. It's the smart thing to do in today's world.

Well, you can always play the Fire Sale mission from Homefront when you get the itch to go to one of their stores.

After I got lied to by them in the early days online I stopped using them and used anyone other than them. They were offering volume discounts for the builds I was doing if I sent lists of the parts to them, after a bunch of orders with no discounts went through they promptly told me they wouldn't honor their agreement, even though I had it in emails from them, and they had record of it.

Newegg all the way, occasionally zip zoom fly before it was closed up.

I'm hoping that when TD closes both stores in Jacksonville, FL, Microcenter will finally open a store here (at least they have great prices on CPUs in store). Even though TD sucks, it was nice to have a local place to pick up the odd fan or PC cable...with Radio Shack gone, that leaves only Best Buy if I need a quick hard drive or mouse (I hate Best Buy!). Strange that TD can't make money even with no real local competition - I guess the internet really is disruptive to brick-and-mortar stores...Thank God for NewEgg!

I like Newegg a lot but they need to just shut down that Marketplace if they aren't going to monitor what companies are selling and for how much. A while back a member here caught them selling fake video cards on the Marketplace and I had a look and saw that on the Marketplace some Chinese business was selling entry level video cards for $400-$500. Now today I log on to have a look at some laptops. Enter the laptop area and the first laptop listed is

DELL Latitude E7240 (462-5616) Notebook Intel Core i5 4300U (1.90GHz) 8GB Memory 256GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4400 12.5" Touchscreen Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

price: $4,046 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834300828

Amazon price: $1,029

I didn't enter the Marketplace area. Newegg shouldn't have listed that laptop as the first laptop on the list.

Edit: I did choose Sort By: Highest Price.

Actually, you're supposed to pay taxes online, regardless if the company has a location in your state or not. Amazon doesn't have a distribution center in MN, but they have taxes applied to all sales now. Granted, this is controlled on the company's side when you buy something, but even if you don't get charged for taxes you're "supposed to make note of online sales and pay the taxes in when you file your taxes". Though, this isn't enforced and more hassle to track. You can find more about it if you want, click here.

I'm not sure how it works outside the United States, but by law we are supposed to pay taxes for online purchases, even if they aren't applied to the order when you pay for it from the retailer.

Not true!!!

Sales taxes are levied by the individual states and not all require them if the company does not have a physical "presence" in your state. There is no federal sales tax or federal requirement to collect state sales taxes in the US.

Don't be surprised if it eventually gets passed though, as states lose more and more sales tax revenue to the internet. Eventually enough of those elected members' states will need the money so badly they won't have a choice but to pass it.

Technically you're already supposed to list the amount of internet purchases now on your state tax forms, but few do.

to be fair, that amazon laptop is 4Gb vs 8, 128Gb vs 256, and not a touchscreen...But I agree, the Marketplace and the introduction of the "Premiere" service has reduced Newegg's profile in my eyes. I used to use NE as the end-all for my PC parts purchases, but these days, I hit Amazon, ProVantage, Tiger, etc....

Florida doesn't have a state income tax. :) We only have a sales tax.

NO!!!! Again, as I said in response to neatfeatguy, that depends on the state. Some states don't even have state sales taxes and some states have no income taxes (as REAYTH just noted) and don't require you even file!

You guys are making blanket statements (perhaps based on your own state requirements) but like all blanket statements, they tend to be wrong! So again, (1) there is federal requirement for states to collect sales taxes. And (2) not all states have sales taxes and (3) not all states require you claim Internet sales on your returns and finally (4) not all states require even filing a return.

Wow, such hostility. I'm with you...I'm a hands-off government type guy. And all your current points are in fact true, except the no sales tax one, which I'm not aware of. I'm just saying don't be surprised if it eventually happens, as one of the major sources of revenue for most states and counties continus to dry up.
