Gamers!

I am recruiting participants to take part in a research study I am conducting as part of my Doctorate in Forensic Psychology. The study is looking at the differences in motivations, personality differences, and behavioural outcomes based on choices made in video games. Participants need to have played Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. If you would like further details or to take part in the study, follow the link below:

https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1752216/MW2

The questionnaire should take no more than 20 minutes to complete

Please be aware, in order to prevent “thread bumping” I will not be replying to anything else posted on this thread. If you wish to contact me to discuss the study, please use the contact details provided from the study page.

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at this post.

Oh yes, I've become a rampaging serial killer since playing violent video games, especially Call of Duty. :p

btw, there's no need to avoid bumping the thread. You're welcome to be a TPU member just like anyone else and take part in the forum.

I took the survey. I skipped the killing civilians part in MW2 not because it would have had a negative effect on me but because it's just not my thing. If I were not given the choice to skip it then it wouldn't have been any big deal to have played that level. I can be aggressive in games

but I'm not aggressive like that in the real world. I think people that are affected by violence in games and can't distinguish between a game and the real world have a mental issue before they ever played a video game and acted out in real life. Take away violence in video games and they will still be exposed to plenty of it in movies.

Some of your questions have the same answers multiple times in the multi-choice section. Also it's excessively obvious what the purpose of the questionnaire is because of the wording of some of the answers, leading you to "inaccurate" results from participants who disagree with the concept you're trying to prove, or providing excessively false responses on purpose.

I took it as well, and I enabled the No Russians in the game. I agree with 64K in that I believe that people who have problems with separating reality from video games have mental issues already. I shot in the airport, because it was part of the storyline, and my character, I believed, would have shot to maintain his cover. Altho, I did miss a lot more than I did in other parts of the game :). I didn't really feel the need for mass slaughter to continue the role.

For this, having participated in several surveys, and studied the results of many more, there are several goals for this type of questioning. One is to determine if a person is trying to "game the system" by giving an answer that they want to give, or one that they want the interviewer to perceive. There is a great deal of evidence that answers to the same question (asked slightly differently to mask the "same-ness") can vary based on preceding questions.

I treated 'no russian' as a science experiment when I played it, after I realised what the mission was about. i.e. I had no longer had an emotional involvement in it. I just tried things, like 'what happens if I shoot the sprites?', 'what happens if I try to shoot my team?', 'what happens if I rush the police men while pegging grenades at them, will I die in game'. I was surprised by the storyline aspect of it, after the fact/ending.

As such the main question regarding the motivation, I could only answer as all no's. Which means I failed the experiment :p

I thought the personality profiling was good, but often the wording was so similiar to earlier q's that I could almost pattern match then 3 times down the page (page 3). The final two pages were pretty interesting retrospective analysis though :)

Cheers,
metal

Oh I forgot to add. The questions about wanting to emulate the game, I could only answer with respect to my real gaming passion... sim racing. (as the question was more about 'gaming/movies/entertainment', and not mw2 specific...)

I have no want to emulate that character in mw2.

Were as sim racing has it's real life counterpart. Being a part of a team of russian mobsters doesn't.

I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but I get the feeling it's one of those bullshit questionnaires that's really just trying to prove a particular point, usually for political reasons. If you think that's the case, then please delete the thread, or at least the link to the questionnaire. We don't need to help him peddle crap like that.

I don't see that from the questions, but I think any questionnaire could be interpreted many different ways, given enough incentive :) I just took it as relatively harmless.

Qubit FFS? I'm ashamed of you. To say "I haven't read 'A', but I'll maybe condemn it anyway" is all wrong. Do the questionnaire first.

This.

It's pretty obvious the study is identifying two variables - motives for playing games and personality traits. It may end up showing correlations but nothing more. Only if the study conclusion becomes one of causality is the author then completely lost (and a fud). That violent people play violent games is perhaps true but it doesn't imply causality of mental conditioning. What is infinitely more worrying is the real life social media stories and posts of real disasters and carnage that desensitizes us to it.

Playing a violent fantasy game does not a murderer make - it's fantasy after all. People who enjoy sadistic games - well, that's perhaps another matter - who knows. However, if i watch dead bodies on the 6 o'clock news every day, dead bodies suddenly become quite routine. Modern news reporting, social blogging and FB are all playing a role in the desensitization of our morality - not to make us evil but to make us apathetic of it.

I'm just going by what RCoon said and extrapolating. That's my disclaimer and get out of jail card - it's all a big "if" the questions are biased like that. :)

Why do people go off on video games when there are so many other sources of violence to be seen by children from movies and surfing the internet? I was just reading this article about some principals in the UK threatening to call the police and social services if they thought a kid was playing adult games like Call of Duty.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/...s-to-call-police-on-kids-playing-adult-games/

Would the police even respond to those calls?

Considering we had an elementary student suspended for threatening a classmate with The One Ring, it wouldn't surprise me if the police showed up pretty much anywhere....

The same reason the news goes mad when 150 people die on an airplane, despite the fact that cars cause 10 times more deaths a year than planes. Because it's controversial and exciting.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I played the heck out of the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and ever since there hasn't been a single Minotaur sighting in our neighborhood. NOT ONE! Coincidence? You just keep thinking that. I'll be polishing my armor here in the corner...

The survey is kind of flawed... especially to Russia's neighboring countries... as most of them historically were invaded and screwed by them, so taking part in that mission was kind of acceptable without further questions asked, it has no kind of connection with the game but with pure history and national mentality. :D Like and old saying in Finland during WW2... It may sound retarded, but national wide hatred is a common thing in the world it must be taken into account.

A Frozen Hell: The Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940 by William R. Trotter
The Finns, faced the inevitable Russian Armageddon with a grim optimism that must be alien to anyone who has not themselves lived through a desperate land war for their motherland. Of the upcoming casualties, they asked, "There are so many, and our country so small, where will we find room to bury them all?

I daydream and fantasize, with some regularity, about things that might happen to me.

Best part when seeing an uber hot chick...

Can't make myself "thank" the post, but ^^this. Suicidal pilot took 150 people with him.

Trust me on this: depression can do some seriously messed up things to a person......
