Hey, guy's it's been a long time! I hope this forum works.
So we got in contact with a fiber optic company and they said we can get fiber to our house for around $8,000 installed. Last year it was brought down our road and they asked if we wanted to hook up for $1,500, we had never heard of the fiber company and went on vacation so missed the deadline :banghead: .They claim they had a limited time Gov. Grant to help with cost.
We live in the middle of the country on a gravel road, currently we can only get Wireless - Canopy Point-to-Point with Download speed of 128K....

The Fiber line is about 0.5Miles away it was ran to a Verzion Wireless Cell Tower.
Main Question's-
1. Do you think this is a good price for the distance?
2. Do you think it's worth it? Example: home resale value goes up?
3. What is a good speed for 2 people watching 1080p video at same time? Maybe also gaming.(pCars/StarCitizen)
4. Does anyone currently have Fiber? Pro's/Con's?

Going to try and get these prices lowered if we agree with the installation price $8,000 can do 24 month installment plan.
Here's the quoted speed/price
"
  • Tier 1: 1Mbps/512Kbps for $34.95*
  • Tier 2: 6Mbps/1Mbps for $49.95*
  • Tier 3: 15Mbps/3Mbps for $69.95*
  • Tier 4: 50Mbps/25Mbps for $99.95*
  • Tier 5: 100Mbps/50Mbps for $149.95*
*when also subscribing to local telephone service
With Broadband Internet from Interstate Communications, you'll get lightning fast connections as well as:

  • Unlimited Internet access
  • A choice of Internet speeds
  • Faster website searches
  • 20 megabytes of space to host your own website
  • Faster downloading of files
  • Dedicated "always on"access, no more dial-up
  • Up to 5 FREE email addresses with main account
  • Share one account with multiple computers"
Thank You for any info as I have been busy and out of the tech loop.

fiber is worth to have, i had 33,6kbps/ 256kbs/ 2mbps/ 4mbps/ now on 100mbps seeing your current speed im really sorry for you. but 8k is INSANE price. even 1k is a lot. 10-20mbps is about enough for 2x 1080. if you can lower prices few times its worth it for pleasure for hhndrets of times faster internet

Holy triple post batman!

I think that is a high-ball price. I think it costs about $10,000 per mile to run so you should definitely try to negotiate a lower price ($6-7k is more reasonable).

I wish I could get fiber to the home. :(

Tier 3 should be close to handling two simultaneous streams. Tier 4 shouldn't have any problem.
Fiber will be much, much better than wireless simply because the latency is much lower.

If you have the money and want extra fast internet response, do it. Once you have it, you will never want to go back to anything else.

I don't have it, but one of my kids does at her house. It's fantastic.

This is a good idea. Other homeowners in the area, and even landowners without a house built yet may want to invest in something that makes the value of their land go up.
If there is Fiber Optic capabilities right at the property, that's a huge selling point for an owner.

Those are pretty much the standard prices for cable internet not fiber your speeds should be better than that for fiber direct to the house.
8k is a bit much to have someone come out with a ditch witch and run a plastic sleeve through the ground .5 mile.
Also it might be worth asking around if your neighbors have or want internet they might cut the price down for the install if you can get more people on the way plugged in.

I understand your situation though left with the choice of this or 128k, but the price for installation seems a bit excessive almost like they are extorting you because they know you have no other options.

Quite a few years ago the company I was working for was in the same situation. Only business in the area that needed such a connection so we ate a 2 mile install cost, paid for over 2 years.

First I'd check with Verizon to see if the new fiber line they got opened up any new possibilities for you - faster wireless through them or DSL perhaps.

1. Do you think this is a good price for the distance?
Depends on how important fast internet is to you. For some people it's worth the long term cost, for others, it isn't.
2. Do you think it's worth it? Example: home resale value goes up?
If I were in your position, I would definitely be considering it. Granted I would also be thinking about getting a bank loan for the install cost since it's a lot of money up front. As Ford said, try to haggle that price down a bit. It only increases the value of the house to someone who wants fast internet.
3. What is a good speed for 2 people watching 1080p video at same time? Maybe also gaming.(pCars/StarCitizen)
Tier 4.
4. Does anyone currently have Fiber? Pro's/Con's?
If you're on Cable, you're probably on fiber until the last mile. Generally speaking, fiber is the best considering companies like Comcast use it for their Coax services. All in all, considering your position and if you're willing to spend the money, go for it. 128Kbit down is terrible. I could barely do my job on that and I can hear my wife complaining about the internet already if it were that slow. :p As you can see though, the con is the cost (up front cost that is, I get cable tv and 100Mbit internet for 130 USD/mo. 80 USD of that is internet iirc.)

Unless you know how to administer a linux server, I won't recommend selling internet to your neighbors.

Damn I have found something more expensive in the US, fibre only packages over here appear to be a bit more reasonable, I suppose though they don't have to cover some of the vast areas you have, as an example the 100Mbit package costs £33.50, I suppose that's around $50 - $52................

That's too much for what your getting. You are getting no benefit of fiber there, those are U.S. Cable internet speeds. Top tier they have 100/50 for $149 PLUS phone..?

I am with comcast in Michigan, I get 125/25 internet, voip phone + cable tv, HBO, starz, encore, digital preferred with DVR X1 and 2 x HD boxes for $120 a month......

Friend got cable to his house about 8 years ago. roughly the same distance for about $3500k... don't know what the whole deal was... I do know there were additional houses involved. He did (and does) a lot of work from home, so he never looked back.... particularly after dealing with satellite internet for a few years and getting capped about every day.

Right now, you can't get better than fiber. $8K is a big chunk but you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. It sure will improve the sale-ability of your home.

If you do want it and willing to pay a negotiated price. Couldn't you do the labour work yourself or hire a separate company to do it?

I'm in groundworks/civil engineering and know how much companies like to charge for this type of work compared to a smaller private company. Just depends on where the trench and services have to be routed, then all other public services/ highways etc.

If they have to cut through roads, paths etc then i understand the price.

An important consideration is if this is in fact a home improvement or not? If this is true then you should be able to write off the cost on your taxes and likely get a low interest home improvement loan to cover it. ;)

Thank you for all the information, we will for sure try and get the price down. We run a business from our home so we can at least put the cost on our business. It doesn't require large amounts of data, just needs to be working at all times. Our current internet goes out at least twice a week. We use cloud service to do routing for technicians(My Dad and I), once they complete the task the information is sent back to the home. Sadly we live out in the countryside no one else is around here for a ways to help off load price. If we can get them down to $5-6k I think we would go for it, also going to try and get cheaper prices for the monthly service.

Will have to give them a call now :D
The will follow 143rd that is a dirt Level "B" road. our land is on the left of the road.

Just re-read the first post, if the connection to the fiber is through your land and partial gov. land, and mostly all gravel/mud?

I would hire out a digger, locate all drawings and service locations, order a lot of sand and a trench whacker, ask ISP provider or fiber installer' minimum requirements for trench, depths etc, type of insulation or ducting and then buy some public indemnity insurance. Get someone that knows how to drive said digger, and a little bit about groundworks. Double edit; also a CAT scanner which can locate underground cables/services which is vitally important (deadly and costly if hit)

Organise everything with council, fiber installer, pay for the connection only (I bet about 1/8th of cost) and do it all yourself (with some help)

Invoice everything, invoice yourself for hours of work and tool hire, account it all..... etc

(That being said i have fiber and it's sometimes unreliable, although shockingly fast, it tends to cut out usually when the router takes a beating lol)

Sounds interesting, It will be right on 143rd st in the picture then onto my land. I have a cousin that does electrical work and I think he has laid power down before.

Here is a screenshot of what I gave them. They want to do Route #2 of course...

Here is the whole thing since they didn't go with option #1 Can't get my neighbor at the bottom I guess technically My neighbor on the far right could hook up but thats like 100ft from the tower's current line. So I don't think it would help pricing.

Yeah, fiber is pretty awesome.
I just got a house in Nashville TN and its going to have googlefiber put in as soon as that's available in my area, it's already installed in one of my parent's houses

Quick question. Is any part of G4R that runs along your property in line of sight from the house and is the land relatively flat? If it is, you could have the fiber terminated at the street and use something like Ubiquity's airFiber to complete the trip over the air so you don't have to run fiber across your property, but two radios, you're looking at 2k USD not to mention setting them up on each end and if the fiber can feasibly be terminated at the street (you'll probably need an additional hookup to the electrical grid, where ever the fiber gets terminated). You add a little bit of latency with the wireless but, losing 2-4ms isn't anything more than you see having last-mile copper with HFC. It's just an idea.

You really need a detailed drawing (from council/gov.) showing all services.

Gas
Electricity
Sewage
Land drains
Water
Misc.

But looking at that picture, your property does look self contained in terms of sewage and water. I'm not sure if you have gas or oil etc. I don't want to make it sound easy, but if you hit or mess up any public services you will be charged 10's of thousands for repairs and compo. (hence the insurance) If its on your land then you have a lot more flexibility.

If your cousin has a little bit of experience (or someone with knowledge wants to volunteer) then it is fairly straight forward. Cable can be laid in a sanded trench of X depth and size, doesn't have to be perfectly straight, does have to follow ^^plans, meet ISP requirements, be X distance from gas or marker taped. (Using my UK knowledge, US may vary)

If you can hire a cat scanner (and use some kind of gps gadget with map and grid reference) you could have a prior survey yourself and see what obstacles are in the ground. like this: http://www.cabledetection.co.uk/

@Aquinus Sadly no, nothing is in line of sight, that part of G4R is very steep heading down into a valley. Thats why Verizon put a tower there, we live on one of the taller part's of this county. I do like the idea of the airFiber maybe they could put on on the tower :D I can see it out of the kitchen window. We do currently use Ubiquity router/wifi.

EDIT: haha would be fun if we could hook it up to our big grain silo sadly no power to it currently, could put solar panels on top :D

@d1nky I like the idea, but we will try and talk them down first going to try and call today. the only thing that it would have to cross we have rural route water line going across our property on the very bottom right corner, no gas that I know of.

After that get in contact with a few groundwork companies and ask for a quote, explain the situation. Then give the ISP a counter offer.

@d1nky how about me and you go and do it for him ?

Me in the machine, you on the ground, swap half time if you are bored staring at the dirt, 750mm dig, bit of dust, chuck in some ducting with a line in, pull it through, backfill, whack,...........3 days tops. Spend the rest of the fortnight cruising the sights.

Probably work out cheaper to fly us over the pond.

What do you think about this https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanobeam-ac/ $99 each. We won't be getting internet over 100MBPS, run one to the silo and put another on the house, we currently a device that looks just like this, but 5years+ old and from Motorola. https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/airmax-yagi-antenna/
