I'm entirely in agreement with your comment, Frederik S. IMHO, I believe that if these sort of mice were to be made more available, they'd cover about half the market, allowing for those that prefer the horizontal design, while others switching over to the greater comfort afforded by this design.

but for people like me who googled the very same question today and found this forum, i thought it was worth bumping this one up again

How about not-so-vertical buttons? Corsair M95

It's different but I think you could tilt your thumb vertically (also horizontally) to press the side buttons. I think the idea is the similar.
I find the lower and middle button is easy to press with a bit tilt.
You should try it first though, apart from it depends on the size of your thumb, I myself don't like overall shape of M95, much prefer new Naga.

another contender, Steelseries WoW Wireless

I think it's pricey, and expensive or cheap, I think most mouse have crap durability.

EDIT: just realized, it's grave digger thread...

And destined to be, the thread author was in denial as to WHY his beloved mouse was discontinued. Crusade threads never last long. And I wasn't accusing him of crusading for THAT mouse like he made it sound, just vert buttons, even implying all other designs are wrong.

It just doesn't make sense to place buttons ON the thumb grip area of a mouse, esp as heavy as today's mice are. You'd have to be a slider with a light grip and never lift the mouse to not accidentally click them.

That said, the main problem some horizontal thumb buttons have is there is no ridge underneath them preventing your thumb from sliding onto them and clicking them when lifting the mouse.

Precise mousing takes a light yet controlled grip, which is benefitted by grippy material and properly shaped and placed buttons and ridges. Expecting everyone to grip a mouse ON the buttons and not have problems is nonsense. Going on a crusade about it, even more so.

this is why my reccomendation for the G700/S hasnt changed. its got four buttons you can grip easily, and you just roll your thumb around to hit any of the four with ease - you can put pressure on the gap between them and lift the mouse without hitting a single one.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm talking about. A lot of avid gamers when the action gets heated up and you have to move and shoot quickly grip fairly hard and lift the mouse at times, and that's when accidental clicks are more likely to happen. It may not happen all the time or very often, but you certainly don't want it happening during critical boss fights or online play.

One of these days I've gotta go see what mice if any Best Buy might have strapped to a display board. They used to do that, but I don't know if they do anymore. I really hate having to return stuff for ergonomic reasons. They'll often give you that look like you're 1 in a 100 that complains.

For what it's worth, I am glad the OP made this post, because I am looking for the very same thing, for pretty much the same reasons. While the OP perhaps shouldn't have described the stacked layout as objectively better, I think there are clearly people who do prefer it. It's impossible to know exactly how many people for a lot of reasons, but one obvious one is that very few mice have offered this configuration, so many people have probably not even stopped to consider possible alternatives. I only recently realized that this is what I wanted when I was trying to find a key and button mapping that I liked. Even then, it took me a while to go from "On all of the gaming mice I've used, I've found that I can only comfortably use one of the two thumb buttons" to "If these two buttons were stacked vertically, it would work perfectly for me".

And a cursory Google search reveals that over the years, different people have made similar forum posts, even in the past couple of years. So if anyone has become aware of any gaming mice with vertically-stacked buttons that debuted since the heyday of this thread, I would be very grateful to hear about them.

Hey there guys
So, it's been quite a while since I bought my Microsoft SideWinder X8 mouse and have been wondering if there is any comparable high quality gaming mice that also have vertical thumb buttons. I can't figure out why on earth this hasn't caught on, it's so much better. There are many great mice out there, but you either gotta bend your thumb right back to use the 'back' button for stretch it to reach the 'forward button, which is much, much less comfortable.
There gotta be more mouse manufacturers out there that jumped on the simple but great idea of having those vertically oriented, right? :wtf:
Funny that 10 years have passed and no one is still making normal thumb buttons. In a horizontal layout they are useless.

You either position your hand by putting the thumb on the front button like on the picture, but then in order to reach the wheel and closer mouse button you have to bend those two fingers. It cuold pass for the thumb, but bending middle the whole day is out of the question.
The better option is to pull hand backwards and position middle finger on the wheel, where it should be, but then your thumb can't reach the front button.
