how much of a bottleneck an E7400 to the GTX670

hi guys,

its been a while since i upgrade my PC,
and i just get an GTX670 for my PC (in the system specs)

one thing i want to ask, how much of a bottleneck would a E7400 do to an GTX670

and should i get a quad for cheap, to lessent the effect of bottleneck.
i dont want to change my mobo yet, because i still like the P5Q3

quite a bit, to be honest. a faster CPU in the socket may help, but dont assume more cores is the only answer - make sure you get better per-core performance as well, not just more cores.


To be honest, socket 775 is going to hold you back severely. Grab the GPU all you want, but dont throw money at a long dead platform. save for something newer and faster (even if its second hand, i got my mobo + CPU for $150)

Even an i3 4130 would pound that 7400 into the ground. I3's are great budget gamers

I would say try it with the E7400 and see how much it bottlenecks your system. If it will bother you then seek for an upgrade

im thinking of getting a cheap used X58 mobo,
because i have an Xeon X5675 lying around.

but i think i have to use an ECC RAM to make it work. and ECC RAM are expensive.

@Devon68 for current games i play, its not really bothering me,
but i feel quite bad for the GPU itself, being held back by the CPU,
oh in some games, like simcity, its quite laggy.

because i have an Xeon X5675 lying around.

thats a much better chip than you have, and while it supports ECC it does not require it.

thats such a ridiculously high end chip to have lying around, even if it is from an old socket.

Get the used X58 motherboard and use your Xeon X5675.

Sell your E7400 and Socket 775 motherboard to fund it if you have to.

Just invest in a new Z97 board and an i5

Running a GTX670 on a E7400 you will loose at least 25-35% of the capability of that card

Obviously the X58 with 6 cores will bench test faster. But its an old platform and used parts come with issues also. I would get the new board

You could also go with a H97 and i5 and the GPU would not suffer at all

From my own experience a Q6600 quad core overclocked to 3200mhz was still a bottleneck for my HD6870 when i had it so i would say the 670 would defo struggle with a E7400

Before I upgraded to the a new gaming rig I was running a e8600 @ 4 gig with a gtx 760, and was running dirt 3 at about 30-35 fps. Just going to the new 4790k pushed it up to 60fps (note running vsync and nvidia 3dvision).

Single threaded application the i5 4440 would be faster due to superior IPC.

Multithreaded applications the X5675 would be faster, due to core count. (6 core vs. 4 core)

It really depends on your applications and how optimised they are for multithreading. The longer you hold onto the X5675 the better investment. it is.

If it was a fresh build I would go with the i5 4440. You've got the X5675 already so you'll save money, so I would go that route. Not sure how well the X5675 overclocks, but I'm sure if you can overclock it slightly it would match the i5 4440 in some single threaded applications too.

Also another thought is. Sell the X5675, sell the E7400 and socket 775 and start fresh with a modern i7.

its 6 core 12 thread vs 4 core 4 thread, so the multi threaded performance difference would be quite large in favour of the xeon.

well, in single core performance and overclocking, the g3258 will beat the q9550 and use alot less power.

Just be aware, it is only 2 cores with no HT, so some games will balk at playing it. A couple that come to mind are FC4 and Watchdogs, IIRC. That problem is only going to get worse with newer games. Finally, the strength of the G3258 is its strong overclock potential. If you are getting a "cheap" Z97 board, make sure it has the ability to overclock well.

The Pentium G3258 would destroy the Q9950 in single threaded applications. Multithreaded performance the Q9950 could keep up but for the amount of heat output and poor single threaded performance it wouldn't be worth it.

The Pentium G3258 isn't really a good choice overall IMO. I wouldn't invest in a dual core expecting longevity.


I would rather spend more on the used X58 and re-use that old Xeon X5675 than touch the Pentium G3258.

And at least here lga1156 is also pretty expensive, and the increase over an overclocked Wolfsdale isn't worth it, lga1155 stuff can be had for pretty cheap though. But it's not much of a step up to new stuff anyway. Unless you can get a super deal it makes most sense to buy new stuff.

I would spend less on the motherboard and more on the cpu.
