Randomly over the last few weeks my HDD has been disappearing from windows and bios. Was just on a webpage and got a BSOD saying KERNEL_DATA_INPUT_ERROR. It's only the data drive and not my OS drive that is affected. Does anyone know if this is hardware failure of the HDD,mobo, or memory? Or is it a corruption in the bios maybe??? The laptop is an MSI GX-70 Destroyer. Thanks in advance.

I would say the driver for the SATA drives is going south on you, if possible take the drive outta your laptop and connect it to a PC via SATA or USB, see if it drops out there. If it doesn't, you could run memtest but I'd be leaning towards the SATA driver on your mobo failing.

What's the BSOD code you get? The 0x0000... code.

I had the same thing happen to an old samsung drive of mine. Turns out that the hard drive itself was on its way out.

Back up all your data and contact MSI if your laptop is still under warranty. If not then order a replacement hard drive of your choice and put it in yourself.

MSI might want you to send the laptop back to them though. though some warranties allow at least one pickup and RTB before you have to send it back yourself, so check the warranty policies and see what youre entitled to

I ran WD diagnostic tools on it and it passed? Still think it could be the hard drive itself though?

I ran a memtest and it came back no errors. I didn't get the code when it dropped off... Where can I find the dump file in win 8.1 on a crash to see? I found a ton of errors in the event viewer and I can attach that if needed

Had this problem on my one of my laptops, it turned out to be the SATA daughter board (if I remember correctly).

You can go into Event Viewer, go to System, and filter it for critical, then browse down to around the date and time that BSOD occurred. You will find the crash, and in there will be the BSOD code.

Odds are it is your HDD or Mainboard with your issue...I'm glad your memory passed tho!

Crash dump initialization failed! lmao... go figure, even that couldn't get it right. there are a ton of errors though pertaining to disks but nothing that shows a code that I see.

so what are all the SMART values? are you sure there are no loose cables or motherboard issues? i'm still unclear as to what models or even types your 2 drives are

My operating system is on a sandisk 128 gb SSD, the original harddrive in the laptop is moved as my data drive, it's an hgst (western digital) (https://www.hgst.com/) 1 tb

... crashed again and this is all I could pull from it...
