I love the shit people trying to defend this.
"People can't afford to waste their time making mods for free  This is not slave labor "
Then I guess you should get a job making games then because no one is going to pay you for mods and no one is forcing you to waste your time doing it for free.

Then he isn't a true modder. Modders enhance the game for the sheer love of a game and want to share that. By no means do I demean their efforts. I have literally years of people's work in my skyrim game, and I myself did my own rather large mod for original Rome Total War that took me most of a year at a few hours a day, so I appreciate the amount of work involved. But you do it for the game, not for financial reward if you are a REAL modder.

Agree
Now people seem to be implying that a financial reward is necessary and expected.
The thing I don't understand the most is why they are defending steam/bethesda taking all their money.
As others have pointed out you will make way more money hosting mods on Curse and no one is paying for anything besides advertisers.

Gosh ethical reasons really? So it's 2015 and we talk about ethics? Lol. Well next year brain transfer will be attempted again, not many called that a ethical problem. I hate it when people gets locked down due to ethics or religious reasons and then things take longer.

Why the steam hate? I love steam, spent most of my life there. Where I grew up.

Paid mods It's supposed to support people who u love the work they have done. And paid mods will be more updated and more content rich.

It's supposed to encourage even more in depth and detailed mods. It's not going to replace free mods. Only if the mod creator abuses it. So if u don't want to pay then u don't hafto. But I'm willing to pay for better content.

It's like a competitive way to make mods better. They try to do the best work possible to get the most money. It's the same way games are done and sold.

What we like we get. And voting and favs will make items come on front page.
It's how workshop works, so all bad mods will be gone and good mods will earn money

How dare they give modders an opportunity to get paid for their hard work.

I would likely never pay for one of these mods but I can't really see any ethical objection other than the measly 25% to the creator thing. Actually no, if a modder does not agree with the terms, they do not have to post it as paid. While I dislike the 25% deal, it is not unethical in my opinion.

For me the hate for steam is from the fact I probably have $1000 in Steam games and cant play any of them due to an account error that has been going on for over 6 months that customer support wont even try and fix.

Now imagine a future where you can't use your favorite
adult
mod because the UI it needs is behind a paywall.
https://archive.is/T243l
And what about future Bethesda games? Broken things that need community patches to be playable. Too bad those patches are also behind a paywall

Well then imagine how angry you would be at steam if you could no longer play any of them.
i think u did something to get locked out, steam would help u fix it if they did see u didnt do something wrong. many has abused steam using scripts to get all games to play and if steam doesnt help u. im sure its for a good reason.

I cant wait for this entire system to fall on its face. I think paying is stupid for mods. most modders do it for free because of their own ideals. I will never pay for a mod, I will never support a modder charging. and I have no sympathy for the news stories flying around of chumps who are releasing mods using other peoples assets and getting eaten alive by the internet and the modding community for doing so. I hope they lose 100% of their face.

If by a good reason you mean my email ends in an odd domain @q.com because of QWEST aka CenturyLink then sure. That or Humble Bundle or Steam Gauge gets accounts locked then sure, but Steam better man up and ban those sites from Steam access.

PS
I wont debate this in this thread it's not the place for it. Feel free to use PM if you want.

I get the idea behind the implementation, someone did some hard work to make a mod and they think they should be paid but in practise the system is fucking broken. What if a mod breaks with another mod installed? Valve think a 24hr return policy works but they forget that mods can get updated and updated mods can break with other mods. Its a bit of a clusterfuck imo.

There are 1000s of mods for skyrim each of varying quality.

Then the issue of others stealing assets from others work, others outright stealing a mod and charging for it on the Steam workshop! What if a mod relies on another mod to work?

EDIT: Valve i assume just see this as another revenue stream.

if one mod relies on another i guess you better buy both even if you didnt want the other one at all. This isn't going to disappear this shit is pretty much here to stay. I for one am pretty much done with Bethesda at this point. 200 mods enabled at the minimum pay what you want price thats $200 + $55 I spent on the game and $25 I spent on DLC. So $80 for the game and possibly $200 mod cost? yea nope no thanks that screams free to play to me. I just go by a gun some ammo and go to the shooting range or buy a new rod and reel and go fishing.

AH but see if a mod author says no to the redistribution of their assets. Then you DO have to buy both its not so far fetched that soon you will have to BUY Sky UI + SKSE + Realistic Dieaseses etc. Thats what going to happen. RD requires the other two to function 100%. so if all five are $5. Thats $15 to get a better UI and have a mod work. Wet & Cold applies to this as well. In the end doesnt matter much Ive backed up my old mods and i am capable of fixing bugs as they crop up. Not everyone is that lucky. In the end this has pretty much made sure I won't buy Fallout 4 or any Bethesda title. Seems they are chalk full of terrible business ideas of late. Pay to play MMO / mods costing money etc.

This does prove one thing tho. Remember all the times Bethesda said console was their primary platform. Something tells me this change and making mods cost money proves they sold better on PC with larger profit margin. This just reinforces that. Guess what platforms now the lead platform.

And some of us don't like a DRM platform, regardless of how old it is, or how accepted a younger generation finds it.

Exactly where did you get that data? Because I've seen Nehrim, and I consider that pretty freaking content rich, and they did that for the love of the game, not the money. And let's not get started on "But that's the only one!!", because we all know there are more.

Ethical? Nah, I got no issue with a modder hoping to make some cash, if they've got a good mod. But I don't like Valve sticking their nose in looking for some payoff. But it's obvious how abused this is going to get, and I'm still not paying for the mods from Steam. I'll donate when I can. But directly to the modders.

What if i just slightly modified someones mod with another colour or outright copied it then had it on the workshop to sell? Yeah this is a clusterfuck. There is no way Bethesda or Valve can check each individual mod.
