Hi. I hope someone can help me with this odd situation. My friend has a Dell Studio 1735 laptop that he wants formatted to factory condition. Keep in mind his CDROM drive does not work so I am trying to use the recovery partition to do this. On start up I hit F8 and get to "Repair Your Computer." I then pick the correct language, pick the Admin account, select the Dell factory restore option, it barely starts to format it and then VERY QUICKLY just reboots the computer. I never saw anything like it. What the heck is going on? Why would it just reboot like this and not follow through with the format? I can't get around it and to even get to that point I have to work like mad or it reboots before I even get to the format option. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like the link between the C drive and backup partition were broken. This link resides on the C side and may have been deleted.
If you are able to get to the C drive then start the restore from there, not F8.
Did he make back up disks that you could load to a flash drive?

Has the laptop had a virus or crypto lock malware?
It's possible that the backup partition is bad.

The hard drive may be bad as well. SMART data?

He does have a physical Dell restore disc... can I simply copy and paste that to a flash drive to restore it?

You have a good point about the link between the C drive and the backup partition being broken although I never heard of that before, it makes sense. I can get to the C drive however I don't know how I would "restore" it from there. Are you referring to some Dell restore application or something else perhaps? If you are referring to a Dell restore application I don't see one there, I looked. So far testing of the hard drive checks out. The optical drive fails testing of course as I noted the drive is bad, it won't read a disc although the drive itself shows up in Hardware. It is infected (not with any Crypto though) so maybe I will try a Kaspersky rescue disc on it and try all of this baloney again. What a pain in the butt headache!

As your friend has the restore disc, I recommend plugging in a USB optical drive and booting off that.

Also, be prepared for the HDD to be bad. If you can check it for errors (BIOS check or connecting to a desktop PC) that would be a good idea.

UPDATE...

I did a copy and paste of his Dell restore disk to a flash drive, hit F12 and booted to the flash drive, and reinstalled the OS that way. I didn't think it would work, but it did. The downside... getting drivers now as the disk didn't have any of those. I wish I had a USB optical drive, but I don't. It would be a rarely needed piece of equipment like in this case.

there is no reason at all to still be running windows vista
that is asking for all manner of trouble
I would be upgrading to windows 8.1 if the laptop is expected to remain in service ...

I think having to buy a new os is a pretty big reason to still be running vista.

Not that Vista is good, because it's not, but... the user has and wants to stick with Vista and all I am doing is helping them out to get it back to working order. The computer was given to them, they don't have much money. I will say this... for as crappy and slow as Vista is this thing is running very well and fast without all of the OEM garbage on it. I almost have all of the drivers installed at this point and it's very responsive which is a surprise! Trying to figure out 2 unknown devices at this point.

Yeah not knocking it, but I am hesitant because of the reputation of driver update programs. And the crapware they come with usually.

its what I like to call FUDSoft
software that prays on a users ignorance and fear in a effort to make a buck is nothing short of pure computing-evil
"system optimisers" fall into this category as well
all you need todo is open the device manger and look at the hardwareid/venderid and google that :)
