why do you want a new motherboard? Z97 for that CPU you have is a bit pointless, since it is not a k unlocked chip so it can't be overclocked, which is the main point in Z97 boards.

well IMO upgrading to that monitor is really just a side grade if anything 1080 => 1080p. Might want to look into s 1440p screen or something instead to really see nice increase in image quality. Though you might have people tell you that 144hz is a god send and all this other crap.

your system and ram is fine\ your ram is running 1333(=666x2) DDR=double data rate.
there is not much fps to gain from faster ram.
if you plan on staying 1080p with your monitor sli would be for nothing.
1x980 is all ya need for this monitor resolution and higher too.

Maybe consider a 144Hz monitor. I would avoid the CX series, something like this would be better IMO.

HMm valid points i guess i'm getting a new monitor so i can have dual monitor display and i heard that really affects single GPU configs but a 980 is pretty strong. The whole SLI thing is only like 1-2 year thing in the future just to open doors when 2k/4k gets cheaper.
I am getting more Ram so i can play games and render stuff on solidworks (homework/free time stuff i do)

The evga NEX psu's aint that great , i raise the suggestion to a xfx black , seasonic g, evga supernova G2
As for the system , i think with a monitor upgrade you will truly see difference, also for motherboard a z97-d3h is a good option ,
z for non-overclock cpu but its the cheapest option that was intel nic and 1150audio.

I would say investing in a good monitor is the best. After all the monitor is what you interact with the most every day.

a good z97 board usually lets you push the blk-clock a little so it would't be completely pointless
3.8ghz base and 4.0 turbo would't be out of the question if you could get the base clock to around 110
that board depending on the rest of the hardware with some tweaking should be capable of 110 to 115 blk-clock which is a pretty healthy bump

Don't think you can adjust BCLK on H/B series boards.

what PSU do you have? The CX is not a good PSU, you should not use it with an high end system like yours.

You don't really need to upgrade the CPU, at least for now. Your system can handle pretty much any game out there. The i7-4790k will be better for the side work you want to do, but since its not an intensive work, the i5 will serve you fine.

As for the motherboard, unless yours only have two ram slots you should not change it either.

Basically I think you should only upgrade ram (and MB if yours have two ram slots), the rest of your system don't need upgrade.

Remember that this year news intel CPU will be released, and they will probably be a better upgrade,
