Hi guys, this is my PSU: http://www.akortek.org/assets/dkchcobra500icresim13.jpg

Can you tell me how is it? Is it good or will my pc go "boom boom"? :l

And I have FX-6300 and Powercolor HD7850 1GB right now, and I want to get ASUS Strix DIRECTCU II OC GTX960 2GB, so would this PSU support that build?

Edit: Added a poll :p

RaidMax Cobra 500W? (Oh, maybe OP has "Akasa Cobra 500w" instead.) At 500W I'd rather have a single 12V rail.

Nah man, just a local company called "High Power". Why is single 12v rail better? I don't know much about PSUs :/

You don't give all its specs but just from what you have here I would change it. What did you pay for it?

Some things you want in a PSU

Active PFC
80+ Bronze, Gold or Platinum
Single rail - not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the use. But on a small PSU single is better
25 amps or more for the 12+

It actually came with the case I bought, for 71$.

Much better. Cant say for sure if it will burn out and take some hardware with it. Most people here would shy away from a PSU that comes with a case. Just don't push it too hard for now. Like gaming if its hot in your room

Well I'm already getting a GTX960 so maybe I can get a cheaper one instead of an ASUS and get that PSU as well. Funny that a 450w PSU is actually more powerful than a 500w one, tells you something about difference of quality. :)

Also, thanks everyone for your answers, this was my first time on this forum and I think I will stay. :)

Come on don't give me a scare  Why would it?
When it decides to implode, it could take out expensive components with it, they are designed to run basic systems with low power demands.

Yeah man, that's why I am afraid. A bad GPU can kill itself, but it seems it gets dangerous when it comes to PSUs. I just saw a post on reddit about a 2000$ system dying because of a bad PSU and I got scared!

Also thanks for the welcome!

It's mostly all been said, but just to add my 2c. Your PSU currently works, which is nice, but I wouldn't recommend using it for any hardware you'd be sad to lose. If you're planning on putting a GTX 960 in there, I wouldn't risk that PSU frying it. I've used lower end PSUs (not off-brand ones, but low end name brand) with decent success. I had a Cooler Master Real Power 450w that managed to drive two 4870s in crossfire for years. It eventually weakened to the point where it couldn't keep them stable, but I was lucky the thing didn't blow up. I've invested in a couple nice quality PSUs for my larger rigs and even if a weaker, lower quality PSU would have worked, it's just comforting knowing my expensive hardware isn't at (as much of a) risk.

My old Athlon XP 2000+ system blew to bits when a decently nice Enermax PSU decided to bite the dust. I wasn't pulling much power at all or anything, it just decided to spark and smoke. Took out everything except my CD drive.

Corsair PSUs are usually well liked, depending on which series. I've heard their lower end offerings aren't all that great, but whichever one you look at, I'd always recommend checking reviews. Budget PSUs are okay for budget builds, but if you start drawing higher amounts of power, I would suggest going for a nice PSU that's going to give clean, stable, reliable power.

I'll just add my 2c as well. This is definitely one of those gutless wonder PSUs. What that means is it has a wonderous rating but it is totally gutless.

In this case it is rated for 500w, but only capable of 336w on the 12v rail. This alone is a sure giveaway of a gutless PSU that shouldn't be used. Just for a quick reference, if a PSU can't output almost all the power it is rated for on the 12v rail it isn't worth even considering using it. If you don't know anything else about PSUs, know that.

Single rail - not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the use. But on a small PSU single is better

Here is the thing with single rail vs. multi-rail. The reality is all good modern PSUs are single railed. Even if they claim multiple rails, they all really have one single 12v rail. The only difference is multi-rail PSUs have multiple smaller over-current protections and and single rail units have one large over-current protection. That is why almost all the good small units have gone single rail, because the current draw is small enough that putting multiple smaller protections in isn't worth it.

If you buy a nice GPU plus all the other stuff, you don't want to be putting in a cheap PSU. Would you buy a cheap pace maker for your chest? Same with PSU, skimp some where else. Buy a good unit and it will last you a few builds, I usually buy more then I need. Then it always ends up in a different build anyway.

Plus 16 people say replace it, we don't work for the PSU company were just more experienced.

stock psu that come with the case just for standard needs, like board, processor, one hdd and one optical

if you wanna go further i suggest you to replace that, if your rig draws much power and the psu cant supply it, it might be burned or if psu fail, it could kill your hardware

better spend some than risking your hardware and data

A PSU is the most important part of any PC build.
If it's a good one, it will provide clean and stable power to your components.
This goes towards overall reliability too.

A cheap one can result in a catastrophic loss of the expensive pieces in your PC.

By now I hope that you realize not to use that cheapie PSU and ~always~ buy cases without a power supply in the future.
That way you'll get to consider better options for future builds.

Welcome to TPU too.

this PSU lacks 8-pin EPS or 4+4pin ATX cable.... doesn't your motherboard need one?
