Whether today is a happy day or not depends on how you feel about Microsoft.
In the missive, which was tweeted by Amit Roy Choudhary, BillG said:

I believe computing will evolve faster in the next 10 years than it ever has before. We already live in a multi-platform world, and computing will become even more pervasive.

We are nearing the point where computers and robots will be able to see, move and interact naturally, unlocking many new applications and empowering people even more.

I have mixed feelings about MS. One thing is for certain though, MS made a few people rich. The guy to the left, Paul Allen, is worth 17.5 billion dollars. Steve Ballmer, CEO for about 15 years, is worth 21.5 billion dollars and Bill Gates is worth just under 80 billion dollars.

Cry... not really.

Brings back a thought; that, I should have invested in them in 1986... instead of a local bank startup.

Oh yeah, the power of hindsight, tell me about it!

I wish I'd invested in ARM when they were first spun off from Acorn in 1990. Now they're in almost every mobile device going and worth a mint. <sigh>

Yeah, if only we knew. If you had invested $10,000 in MS back in 1986 it would be worth around $3.5 million dollars in stock value and that's not even counting the yearly dividends. It would have seemed like a very risky gamble though at the time and I probably would have passed on it anyway.

I've been working with PCs since 1983, more or less. I started very young. So it's always fascinated me how MS came to dominate the OS industry. I've used the first MS-DOS, all the way up to the latest Windows 10. With a few exceptions to the entire list of their OSs that I haven't used at least minimally. Though I haven't loved them all, I've never really hated any of them(that I've used).

I'm still trying to absorb how I'm getting 10 for free. It's too good to be true in one sense. But somehow I still feel they "owe" it to me. Maybe not everybody, but me specifically. For being a lifelong user. Or something...:p

Maybe someone can refresh my memory: I recall seeing a documentary made by a guy who was part of the original group working out of someone's garage. One day, turns out they don't have the cash in hand to pay everyone's wages and Bill (I think) offers to pay anyone interested in shares instead. This guy declined, a decision that cost him several billion dollars down the road. Did this actually happen?
