the 1GB card could have DDR2, just like the 1.5GB Far Cry 2 edition of XFX I suppose.

I even had a XFX 9600GT with only 48 shaders.

NO, wasn't a GSO. It was a cut down GT with no extra power connector.

It means you have a budget version of the card, that is much slower than a DDR3 512MB model.

I guess they realized that selling a card with the 9600 number on it, but using much cheaper PCB, components and memory, could bring them some extra money in their pockets. This card must be, I don't know, 4-5 times slower than the real thing?
