Yeah, NFS Most Wanted was also cool that I missed mentioning. Granted, some races were frustrating, mosty drag races where racing "rails" intersected with competitors even though they shouldn't. But other than that, it was pretty cool. Good graphics, really nice world, tons of cool cars, amazing police chases and the story was pretty good. I mean it's a racing game we are talking about and it had me really engaged. Hell, it might sound weird or stupid, but the twist at the end caught me off guard. I genuinely didn't expect it the way it turned out. Also the way they presented story using in-game world with live actors gave it that special hard to describe feel. And I think actors did pretty well. I think I fell in love with Mia (Josie Maran) a bit back then ;)

For me, give me tons of awesome cars, tons of awesome tracks that are thematically different and have huge elevation changes and cars with good handling like in NFS HP 2010 and I'm sold. Oh and it needs cops that annoy you during the races. If the game has time score boards that can be compared with friends on Steam/Origin, I'm hooked, because you can compete with friends for milliseconds even if you can't actually get to race together due to time zones or other limitations. It's why NFS HP 2010 got me hooked with its Autolog for so long. I was in constant competition on every login. I had to beat that sucker who beat my time. I had to. I had to be the 1st among friends/others on Autolog. I miss that more in racing games where time is everything.

Uh, two versions of Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed exist: console and PC. They are nothing alike other than sharing cars. Need to specify which. Personally, I think the console version was better because it had an open world before open worlds were popular. The Windows version had a lot more shock and awe factor though. Both are excellent games even compared to today's standards. The attention to detail was phenomenal and there were innovating facets to both. I'd still take Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005) over Porsche Unleashed though because Most Wanted took the best of both games (open world police chases from console version; vehicle customization and challenges from Windows version) and made it so much better (pursuit breakers, greater selection of cars than just Porsche, a coherent plot).
For PC. I had a Thrustmaster Force Feedback racing wheel that I picked up from the local shop and me, being rather young at the time, loved that these cars would fight me around the corners. True, it was missing a few things, but it seemed almost immersive (for the year 2000).

Right but if you drop below whatever fps you choose (I used 45) the game slows down. With how horribly optimized it is I was dropping below the stock 30.

Were you playing it on your current listed spec, or older gear? Like I said it played pretty well for me on my 7970.

I played it on a HD 7770 and i7 870, a gtx 770 and a i7 870, then I moved to the i5 4670k and kept the 770, and then finally moved to a R9 280x and kept the same CPU.

Even overclocked to 4.3Ghz and the 280x at 1150Mhz I can't always keep 30fps. I think it may be either my RAM or HDD as it would lag horribly when loading about anything, but it also had problems with any more than highs with a few mediums that my GPU should have been able to handle.

Maybe I should install it on my new SSD. I haven't played since last summer or so.

Also, the worst bug is when the area ahead of you doesn't load during a chase or a race and so you fly into the unloaded area at 200mph and get stuck. Other cars will drive around you but you can't play until you restart the game.

That last bit you described I'm pretty sure is textures loading too slowly, and the 770 only has 2GB VRAM. The 1333 RAM and a slow drive probably don't help either though. Also, how is your page file setup? I made a partition for mine on a WD 1TB Black I just got. At the edge of the platter it benches at 180Mb/s.

I had that problem with a prior race game, don't recall which, but it was resolved with a workaround, of which I also don't recall. I never had that problem with Rivals though. After the launch option edit it ran smoothly at all times, including with the weather effects, which was one of the cool things about the game.

Looks like EA is doing a "reboot" with this franchise. Just titled "Need for Speed".

They've been doing a lot of that lately.

I really hope the autosculpt system from carbon comes back. I spent ages on just messing with hoods spoilers rims and vinyl layouts in carbon. Also the canyon races were freaking awesome those were just so ridiculously intense compared to any racing game I've played.

If I'm honest, despite being very limited insight, I got that tingling vibe. Might actually be good. I'd still prefer all that I've written above, but I've had quite some fun with NFS Underground so why not. Drag racing was amazing in first one and crazy customizing and car tweaking in the second one was also cool. Was just fiddling with dyno tester to squeeze out that extra half a horse power, making rear wheels more drifty or even tune it for crazy ass acceleration at expense of top speed and winning every single dirt race with ease :D Now that I think of it, yeah, Underground series weren't that bad after all. Looking forward for this new one...

I liked Underground better than Underground 2 overall but Underground 2's open world was welcome. Then Most Wanted came and blew both of them away...followed by Carbon which begun the series' slow descent into EA hell.

If EA wants to do it right, step one is kick Criterion Games off the project. Step two? Well, there is no step two because they don't have the people to make a great racing game anymore.

I think Ghost Games is making this

Criterion is making something cooler

the creative guys at Criterion are no longer with the company anyways.

Also, lol at that box truck in the start. It's been in these games since at least Burnout revenge. EA seems to have gotten it in Hot Pursuit 2010.

Oh, you can trust me the lorry was already in NFS3 Hot Pursuit. I even made it a drivable vehicle with my patch :D Evading cops in such a truck or yellow school bus was the most hilarious racing experience ever :D I remember there was a fire truck pursuit vehicle replacement for the bus. Doing roadblocks has never been so easy :D

Well, I enjoyed U1 & U2, the last one I liked was Carbon, others were disliked or haven't even tried. I'm not sure if U3 would be a good idea, as someone already pointed out - the car culture has changed and there much less inexpensive cool cars. Get nice looking rims and you are good to go, unless the stock is too boring (e46 comes to mind, the non-M bumpers. meh).
Would definitely like some street racing with a proper career, moving up the ranks, not receiving cars for winning a race..
Not holding my breath, the word "story" really bugs me in a racer. Who will have double crossed my this time?

I hope it is similar to U1,U2 and Most wanted, these got me interested in arcade racing games a lot more. In my opinion i hope they incorporate similar modes they have had from those games and obviously new features aswell. For me i want see more cars that are "affordable",muscle cars and less supercars. I want see like good old Toyota Supras,Mazda RX7,RX8, R32+R34 GTRs etc along those line obviously fully customisable to point you can finish the game with that car.

Carbon wasn't bad. It had its moments, especially those canyon duels were pretty challenging, cops more aggressive and the AutoSculpt was quite an interesting idea, even though I've already seen it in "Super Street Challenge" game years back.

The most recent NFS game I bought was ProStreet, and I thought it was junk. I did buy Carbon, but for some reason cant remember it. I played a few of the newer games, but they were too arcade like for me. Most Wanted 2012 you basically have to drift every corner. The newest game I remember enjoying was Most Wanted 2005, and the oldest was Need For Speed II SE. I did not play "Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed."

I doubt I will buy this. Unless there is a demo I would rather buy an XBOX One just for Forza 5 then a new NFS Game.

We might as well file it away as "bad" then. Every damn "reboot" EA did was a miserable failure. EA must be desperate because they keep making the same mistakes. Actually, that makes them foolish.

It was an entirely forgettable experience.
