Hello,

So I just finished my first build ever and it's been running for a couple days now. I've been periodically checking the CPU temperature with Core Temp and the GPU temperature with GPU-Z. I know optimal temperatures will differ for every case, but I wanted to get the community's feedback including opinions on whether I should get additional case fans.

Here is the build:

The Fractal R5 comes with 2 140mm fans located at the back and front of the case. I used AS5 as my choice of thermal compound.

My ambient temperatures have tended to be between 22-23°C around this time. On idle, all of the cores float around 29-32°C and the GPU between 30-32°C. For load temps, I ran Prime95's Small FFT test for 15 minutes and after checking Core Temp all the cores were between 50-55°C. Not sure how to test GPU temps under load, but I can tell you that after playing the Witcher 3 the temps stay below 70°C.

One other note: While I was mounting the CPU cooler to the crossbar, one of the corners did not catch onto the screw (It was positioned correctly above the screw, but the heatsink wasn't low enough on that corner to latch onto the corresponding crossbar screw). Consequently, and this was after I had already started screwing the opposite corner in, I had to gently press that corner down so it would lock into position and I could secure the screw. It took maybe about three light presses for it to finally stay latched for me to screw it in.

Do you think this will have or had any significant effect on my temperatures? If my temps already seem fine, I would rather not have to go through the trouble of opening my case again, unmounting the heatsink, cleaning up and reapplying the paste, etc.

You can go up to 80c safely on Haswell. 95c if you got balls

Just run Heaven Benchmark for the GPU temps

enjoy that beast playing as much as you can, personally I don’t trust benchmarks and crappy tests, so want to test you machine? play a while, then check temps, every time I play check temps…. after and before,

Your temps are pretty fine, don’t worry and enjoy again!

Excellent temps all around!!

With that case, if temps end up rising, you can add another fan up fron and one in the bottom for intake, without raising noise. Probably I would go for the bottom intake first, as it sends fresh air straight to the gpu.

Also, you have two more exhausts up top. You could add an exhaust fan up there for only a moderate increase in noise. The Fractal R2 140mm fans that come with it are among the highest airflow fans that are basically pretty quiet.

No balls needed. Intel says that as long as your CPU is not thermal throttling, it is operating at a safe temperature. Thermal throttling does not start until a peak core temperature of 100°C in the 4690K so no worries.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I"ll hold off on adding extra case fans until I start overclocking. Is there any reason or particular way I should be stress testing my GPU temps?
