BTW I actually fondled an A5 yesterday, and it is definitely too slow. They didn't have an S5 mini, but the Z3 Compact flies. I hate this.

I think you can't go wrong with either the S5 mini or Z3 compact.

I vote for the Z3 Compact, stay away from a cheap Samsung.

"Cheap" Samsung? Not hardly. Less expensive for sure. And there may be some areas where the Z3 excels, but there is nothing about the Samsung to suggest it is cheap in quality or features, or that you need to stay away from it.

agreed, i dont consider a phone that costs $350 CAN when it was new a "cheap" phone. A cheap phone is the sub $110 pay as you go phones and the like IMO

go for the Z3compact,
its very fast, have a nice UI(preference), and a very long battery life,

my friend can clock up to 3 days on normal usage with the Z3compact,
I'm pretty sure no other samsung can even match the battery life of the Z3compact.

Maybe not. But on my Samsung, I can simply swap in a spare, fully charged battery and be good to go with virtually no downtime or worries about running out of charge or finding a charging station. You can't do that with the Z3. In fact, with the Z3, if the battery fails, you have to send the phone in for expensive repairs. :(

Having a user-replaceable battery is one of the reasons I chose my S4 Mini over the HTC and Sony mini offerings.

Go Z3 Compact. No Samsung offering can really dissuade one to get a Z3 Compact, except an S6 (this is when both don't have replaceable batteries). The A-series are still too overpriced, burdened by their design. While the E-series are cheaper than the A's, they are still quite expensive yet are much more similar to actual, cheap phones.

No doubt there are millions who disagree with your "opinion". Because if your opinion were fact, Samsung would not be the global marketshare leader with Sony not even a major player! Instead, Sony is unlisted, lumped into "Others", way behind Samsung, Apple, Lenovo/Motorola, Huawei and LG.

And congrats on hitting your 5000th post on TPU!

well,
that if you want to carry extra batteries with you all the time, and having to charge 2 batteries at once, its a hassle (at least for me)

this is my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.
Sony UI is one of the lightest on the market now, bar vanilla android of course. so it doesnt take a lot of resources to run it smoothly,
i have a sony E3, Note4, and Z2. even the Sony E3 feels snappier than the Note4, probably because of the touchwiz UI that is bloating the phone down.

i love the N4 screen, its very" good, i love the Z2 speakers quality, and audio output. and i love the E3 battery life (3 days with moderate usage)
so the choice really depends on what you really need.

if you want battery life, an UI experience that is closer to stock android, and performance, go the Z3compact
if you want AMOLED screen, physical keys, and removable battery, go for the A5.

I assume you're looking for something new since you'll be taking advantage of a new contract? There's a pretty decent used market over at swappa.com, assuming it's an option.

That's the thing. You are claiming one of the Z3's big advantages is 3 days worth of battery run time. But how often does anyone go that long without recharging? Most users (of any phone) plug in once a day. The point about the removable battery is you can, if you want, have a spare battery ready should you forget to plug in, or have to hit the road. That does not suggest they carry the spare with them all the time. It just means if they wake up in the morning and realize they forgot to plug in the night before, there's no need to panic. Assuming, of course, they bought an extra battery and charged it.

Not sure what you mean by physical keys with the A5.

And FTR, I have nothing against the Z3. It is clearly a great phone. My main issue on this part of the discussion was the comment to stay away from cheap Samsungs.

While a replaceable battery is a plus for me, clearly the long battery runtime for the Z3 is a plus for others - as long as they remember to plug in when it does run down.

@Bill_Bright @entropy13 @AhokZYashA The A5 is cheap on the inside, that is the problem with it. It costs about the same, at the place I'm buying, as the z3 Compact and is massively slower. The screen is really rather nice though... However, it turns out they also do Microsoft phones, and the Lumia 830 is cheaper than any of them. I'm pretty sure MS is working on some new models for Windows 10 though, so I'm not very interested in that, even if WinPhone is really rather nice... I fondled a Lumia 630 yesterday (the only Lumia they had in store) and the UI is beyond anything Samsung has to offer even at mid-range prices.

what the A5 have to offer is just a good screen, slim body, and aluminum frame,
and thats about it.
the rest is pretty mediocre.

I have to admit, I am not that informed here nor do I fully understand all the differences between the various product lines. I do understand the S5 is a better phone than the A5.

physical back and menu button in the A5 is what i meant.
I understand. You confused me by the word "physical". As an electronics technician, that suggests to me there is a mechanical element to it - like a power button or wall light switch you have to "physically" move to make (or break) electrical contact. The A5 back and menu button are not mechanical. They use the touch screen too. They are just in a fixed location, and support backlighting, which I like.

Er, I've been quite specific with my "parameters" (albeit only through implication) in pointing out how the Z3 Compact would be a better choice than any Samsung offering: #1, it had to have a non-removable battery (and that was a relatively recent development for Samsung) #2, it also had to have top-of-the-line specs when it was released, #3 it has to be small. The S5 only satisfies one of the three, while even with the release of the A and E series none of them can still be able to satisfy all three.

And I'm someone who had an S2, S3, and S6.

There are no other phones on the planet.
Well sure they are. But i have reading / watching hundreds of reviews. In a money vs product quality (performance ) i see no other phone. Not even one.
I am a die hard Lumia fan! So die hard that in fact Lumia lacks a critical important option that i need, but in my stubbornness i refuse to give Lumia up. So,in the months to come considering only one phone other than lumia, the M9
