Im still not understanding how people think the 390x will be a rebranded 290x like you guys can do math on the shader counts right?

There were rumors saying that since Fiji is more powerful than Titan X, it will get its own new version of naming.

Only people saying its more powerful are AMD fans using benchmark graph that can't be comfirmed as legit and if its one i am thinking up, it grouped 20 games in to 1 bar which means nothing as you don't know anything about setup used or settings. But if you go buy AMD's own claim vs a 290x which on avg 50-60% faster then 290x with 1 game showing 70%, it mostly puts performance around where titan X is now. So would take any claims of 390x being faster then a titan X as a grain of salt as there is no proof it is or isn't at this point.

Honestly, I think it'd be cheaper (and a better average of performance) to just go for the mid-high card and upgrade more often. Sell the cards when they're still worth a bit and go for the next mid-high card. As it is now, you're stuck holding on to your high end card for as long as possible, suffering through the relatively low performance. I think even a 380x (when it comes out) even if it's a rebrand would be worth it as long as it would save money allowing you to do another upgrade sooner down the line.

I can see how you'd be turned away by the reported memory issue with the GTX 970, but I wouldn't rule out the card completely. All the benchmarks you see are still accurate. It's understandable if you're set on something higher end though.

To directly answer your initial question though, I'd definitely wait for the 390X even if you plan on going for the GTX 980. Two things should happen. One, you'll see credible benchmarks for the 390X and you'll know for sure which one you'll like better. Two, even if you decide on the GTX 980, you should hopefully see a price cut. I doubt it'd go up anyways, so there shouldn't be anything to lose.

One, never trust WTFtech. Two, even if that's true, there's still going to be a Fiji chip and that's the one you'll want to wait for, whatever it may be called.

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Edit: Try something more credible (which even then is just more speculation, but actually has info taken from someone at AMD) http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/amd-unofficially-confirms-radeon-flagship-–-r9-390x-launches-at-computex.html

Again, I'd highly recommend waiting just to see what AMD comes out with (officially). If you don't want to wait, then I'd say just nab the 980 now.

Whatever.

Buy the overpriced latest card you want. It's apparent you already know your choice, despite solid advice given.

My choice, if I were needing to epeen my friends, would be the 390x. You wouldn't understand why but, it would be the best choice for many reasons.

You'll see.

Enjoy your new build. Just build it already!

Unless you haven't check the project log. It is already finished. Minus the graphic card. :D

And no. No about stigma, but about actual usability at 1440p and possible direct compute.

The 980 Ti is supposedly not too far off from coming out OP. So you might want to wait on that and see. Also OP do you like PhysX? Do you see how demanding the game, The Witcher 3, has been? You might want to go with Nvidia if more and more companies making games are finally going to use Nvidia GameWorks.

I've heard the same about the 980 Ti. I think OP mentioned possibly waiting to see when that comes out.

Is PhysX still kicking around? I thought everyone's switched to DirectCompute or OpenCL.

R9 390X is advised, for the greatest feature of 390x is the HBM video memory ,which greatly expands the bandwidth. Also water cooling is also the highlight.

If you are willing to spend 6-7-800 dollars on a new GFX, do you think we give a crap about if it uses a little bit more power ?

I would suggest waiting for the 390x. Wait to see the benchmarks and any possible issues that come with the card. Wait what effect the release of the 390x will have on the pricing range for the rest of the AMD/Nvidia range.
IF you can, I would suggest waiting further for the next series cards using HBM.
Eventually, your going to upgrade to 4k, it seems logical considering everything else you have supports it decently, all you will require is a monitor. Just make sure you don't go for the 970, don't listen to the 970 supporters, the card is defect regardless of what supporters say.
Maybe defect is a strong term, but either way, it has a memory related issue and there is no such thing as overkill when gaming, just, not enough power.

I'm so happy I didn't go for either 970 or 980.
