DO NOT connect the Molex from the pci-e extender to the main PSU
this could cause a floating ground or fry the gpu or board

Just a quick look at the setup I was using, I will take care not to fry anything following your advice about the connections and not hot-swapping the components. Had to do it on the spare bedroom floor as having just moved house I haven't set up my office yet.

I've also just remembered, the second PSU started up on its own (psu fan started up) even without the dual PSU connector plugged in, all it required was plugging the molex connection from the PCI-e extender into the second PSU.

Any idea why this would be the case? It resulted in the same thing though just start up and then gives up after 5 seconds.

EDIT: one more thing I noticed was when I removed the 4 pin power connector from the motherboard and turned the PC on it starts up like expected (although doesn't post a signal to the TV screen I was using), and also the second PSU and GPU started up and didn't turn off.

This is my motherboard I am using

you need the 4 pin power connecter connected to the m/b to supply power to the CPU

Have you tried my suggestion?

if the "extra"psu starts 2nd this will not work. The GPU must be on for BIOS to recognize it at POST. like what @dorsetknob sayeth in #24

I'm going to try this tonight. I've read about the paper clip method of starting a PSU but they mention you need to do it between the black and green wire if I remember. All my wires are black so I'm not sure which ones to do it between.

I could do with a pin layout diagram detailing showing which one, I will give it a google.

Thanks

the Op has something similar but in my and other people's opinion it will not do the job
He needs to power his External card before his system powers on or the Card will not be found by Bios
those adapters work by initializing miliseconds after the main PSU has started to power up by which time the bios has registered that it only has the one graphics system and not the one he wants ( His ghetto'ed EXTERNAL CARD )

I did see the Add2PSU adapter but it would cost about £15 to get it here in the UK, the other dual PSU adapter I linked to earlier seemed like the more economical choice.

If starting the second PSU first via paper clip method doesn't work then I think there is some other problem preventing it from working other than the PSU connection.

I don't know if this is relevant but I also discovered the GPU did not turn on unless connected to the motherboard via the riser, even though both the 3 pin and 4 pin connectors it requires were plugged in correctly. Should this happen or does this allude to a faulty PSU? I have a second 300W Bronze SFX PSU spare if this is the case, what do you guys think?
