Hello everyone! My friend wanted me to build him a computer and I have a general idea on what parts to use. I really want other's input on this rig! He has a $1000-$1200 budget range and primarily wants to play video games like league of legends. I know this is overkill for just one game but I want to plan on the future so I picked parts that you don't need to replace later on.

CPU- Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...)

GPU-EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...)

Mobo-ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...)

RAM-G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB)

PSU-CORSAIR CX series CX750 750W
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...)

Case-Rosewill CHALLENGER - Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...)

DVD- ASUS 24X DVD Burner
Thermal Paste- Arctic Silver 5
HD- Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200 RPM
Heatsink- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Here are my concerns.
1) Should he get a GTX 970 instead of the 750 TI? I don't believe that the games he is currently playing require a 970 but is it worth the investment or should he upgrade later in the future?
2) Is the 750W PSU too much? I was thinking that in the future he might need the 750W instead of a 600W so I went big.
3)Will the case be big enough? I personaly bought a full tower for my Rig so I dont know how big a mid tower is.

Thank you guys and I will appreciate any input! I am here to learn from you guys as well as make a good computer for my friend.

I will remove Arctic silver paste… get Arctic cooling mx4, also a GTX970 will make your build stronger, so take advantage on that… as a personal recommendation… gigabyte motherboards and GPU's for the win….

mid towers are pretty decent now days, take a look on Thermaltake's Cove v51 one or chaser a31 for example,

almost forgot, CX PSU's from corsair are not so reliable, you can get something better for example seasonic or Enermax PSU's…700W will be fine for your build,

Forget that 750W Corsair PSU - instead get yourself a ~550W unit from Seasonic. That can handle every single GPU build and in case of Z97 + GTX970 has still 150+W to spare. Also wait till the end of june - AMD will release new graphic cards which will probably bring some movement to the prices.

who needs 16gb??

Everyone who has massive amount of browser windows open + games/programms running in the background (minimized)

Does he plan to overclock? otherwise a k type cpu is not needed. That 750 Ti is way over priced. I would go for something like this if he doesnt:

Krusha, could you tell me what is difference between getting a Intel Xeon and a Intel i5 4690. I never heard about a Intel Xeon.

Xeon processors are meant to be used as server or workstation processors. There isn't any downside to running them on a normal desktop or gaming computer though. They're usually just nicer in general. Bit lower wattage used too, I think.

It's basically an i7 without the IGP and cannot be overclocked. But so does any non-K i7 / i5
read this Blog post for difference between Xeon and i5/7 class of Cpus from intel. Since this Pc is a purely gaming rig, I would recomend you stick with i5/7 class of Cpu rather than Xeon.

www.velocitymicro.com/blog/xeon-vs-i7i5-whats-difference/
He is using a dedicated GPU so the IGP is not important. Furthermore the xeon is cheaper than the cheapest i7. The only valid point on that blog is the overclockability, but only K - type i5s / i7s can be overclocked

I'm considering a xeon 1155 chip myself if the DX12 rumors hold true. The overclocking potential on a K series is nice but it might be superseded by core count very soon. And even at stock speeds you're not going to struggle with frame-rates.

I actually like that Rosewill case, but you need to go for the newer model with USB 3.0. It has excellent cooling options with 3 x 120mm fans installed, with options to install 2 more fans. It has removable, washable air filters - something I insist on.

If not overclocking, you don't need an aftermarket cooler. In spite of what many may tell you, both Intel and AMD provide excellent coolers with their CPUs. It is important to remember it is the case's responsibility to provide an adequate supply of cool air flowing through the case and the Rosewill can do that just fine. The CPU fan need only toss up the CPU's heat into that flow, and OEM coolers are designed to that just fine too. Yes, you can get a couple extra degrees with an aftermarket cooler, but if you need those few degrees to keep your system stable, that means your case is not doing its job.

That Enermax case only comes with one 120mm fan in back. :( And only 1 filter for the bottom PSU intake.

I like ASUS motherboards, but if I have a choice, I would go with Gigabyte.

As for TIM (thermal interface material), even those OEM pads are much better than they were 5 or 10 years ago, but still, I always remove them and apply something else. I don't like the idea of paraffin melting over my CPU socket.

To me, it does not matter if you go with Arctic Silver or MX4 or whatever. Just get a good one and MOST IMPORTANTLY, apply it properly. That is, thoroughly clean the two mating surfaces then apply as thin, but complete layer as possible. Remember, the most efficient transfer of heat comes with direct metal-to-metal contact. The purpose of TIM is to push out any trapped air in the microscopic pits and valleys in the mating surfaces. Any excess TIM is in the way and counterproductive to the heat transfer process.

Keeping your CPU properly cooled is essential, but cooler does not automatically mean better. A CPU running at 35°C will have better performance, stability or a longer life expectancy than CPU running at 55°C. All that 35°C gets you is bragging rights.

In my opinion if he's just playing LoL then you don't need an i7-4790K. That's a great processor but there's not much sense paying that much for a processor and pairing it with a 750 Ti. So if you ask me, get an i5-4690K (also a great chip, all you'd need for gaming) and the 750 Ti OR keep the i7 and get a 970. I can tell you that a 970 is one of the best cards out there and will not disappoint. As for the case, it should be just fine. Mid-towers have plenty of room, generally. The PSU is really up to him, 750W is kind of overkill, 600W is more than enough for that build but the 750W will likely never be replaced unless he gets a really beefy GPU.

Looks like a solid rig. I would swap the crucial ssd for a Samsung 850 Evo 250gb (100 on amazon) it has significantly better write speeds and is really the best mainstream ssd out there, imo

Again, I would go for the other Rosewill case I linked to above if you want USB 3.0 support up front (and I sure would).

The full price is actually $10 more than the one you have selected but is current on sale for $20 off so it ends up the same price. But with free shipping you end up saving $2.99 and get a better case.

I couldnt find that one of the website, but I did pick that one on my newegg wish list! Thank you for the help.

What? Please explain what you mean.

Note in my post #16 above, I put the Newegg link to the "newer model" that comes with USB 3.0.

On the pcpartspicker website, I couldnt find the Rosewill Challenger S so I went with the Rosewill Challenger just to see the total price. I am going to buy all of these parts from newegg, so I have another list on newegg for that. I never shopped outside of newegg, but its seems that there are a lot of other cheaper places to get the parts.

A (good) 450 watt PSU is all that is needed for an i5/i7 1150 build with a GTX 970. Anything much bigger just puts the PSU into it's worst efficiency when the system is at idle or in 2D mode. Look at this chart for the CS450M. Notice how low efficiency is at power loads below 20%.
