Upgrade or just buy new pc?

currently had this PC around 7 years lol, yeah i know its a bit long in the tooth , but works fine with older games , is it worth upgrading gfx card to get a bit more life out of it,or should i just buy a new pc ?

I see your specs… and I can tell you that the unique reusable hardware may be:

Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro + MX2 {will need new brackets for new processor!}

Also if still available the copy of win 7x64eng, may be useful, so ou might get new motherboard, ram memory processor and for sure Video card!


So you will decide if you can let your old case, psu and rest of old hardware a chance to still rocking,

how much is your budget? that may be the most important thing to know, saving old parts may help you to save for powerful CPU, Video Card and decent or kickass motherboard and ram memory!

and Linus used a q6600 and it didn't do too bad.
Maybe upgrade your gpu to the one you would buy with the new system and see if only changing up the gpu is enough, if not change the rest of the system too.

as far as i know ... this processor could easily handle 8GB DDR3 memory pretty easy!

I say upgrade the MB, CPU and RAM. I'll leave it up to UK locals to sort that out in GBP regarding prices and availability.

Bottom line, I think that core platform is too old to dust off for main gaming rig purposes. It may get you by on a lot of games now if upgraded, but next year when games start getting made for more optimized hardware and Dx12, it will quickly fade away, making anything you spend on an upgrade pretty much wasted.

It all depends what you want to play, if you want to stick with what you have, this is what i would do

4gb ddr 2 , ebay UK about 30 quid
hd 6970 , ebay uk about 50 quid

o/c the Q6600 to 3.0ghz (easy enough on that mobo) and the above "upgrade" will play GTA V 30fps.

frag these are just options for budget save..... Core2Quad are still capable! thats why i mention DDR3 775 sockets....

Well CAPS suggestion would probably get him by for a while at a low price, depending on the games as mentioned. My concern is whether that PSU has aged too much to handle the 6970 on repeated long sessions. It's rated at 50 more watts than a 6970 requires, but cap aging can effectively change what a PSU can do.

If it comes to needing a new PSU too, that is what I would consider tipping the scale to the point of not cost effective enough. We're kinda flying blind here not knowing what games he plans to play on it. Some of the games out now are quite demanding.

I have Elite: Dangerous open in the background and I'm eating up 8.6Gb of ram and it's gone up to 9GB so far. A new platform that supports more than 8GB could be helpful. Also upgrading will be a significant improvement since the advent of putting the memory controller on the CPU, performance has vastly improved. I upgraded from a Phenom II 940 mainly because 8GB of DDR2 wasn't enough. I'm not going to make much recommendation beyond that because I'm getting still hungry and dinner still needs to be made.

I will say this, if you want to spend extra on the platform and not go with a GPU right away, when the Intel i7 5775C is available, get that, a board, and good ram in your budget and start with that. The Iris Pro should be a good step up from where you are now and throwing a discrete GPU in it in the long term will make it scream. It lets you get over that price hurdle with the new socket, new CPU, and DDR4 though and is something I would do in your position.
