i7 1st Gen

Several hours ago, I stopped in a local computer shop to see what they had for sale. I noticed they were selling an i7 1st gen (LGA 1156) for $60. I was wondering is that a good deal?

I haven't used an Intel CPU since an old Pentium 4

1st gen i7s were not LGA1156 and were LGA1366 (the 920, 940 and 960 if I remember correctly).

Yeah those were launched in 2009, whereas the i7 920 was 2008. I know, as I grabbed the 920 when it became available as the first i7 processor from intel. source.

Read the link you posted. Earliest launched i7s were the 920 which were 1366 sockets. Just want to be sure OP isn't buying a first gen i7 (which is the nehalem i7 900 series) and is buying a 1156 compatible processor.

INTEL "we just released a new CPU but you cannot upgrade your current set up unless you buy a new motherboard"

Ps we need the chipset sales revenue as well as the CPU revenue
Please upgrade and boost our corporate profits

I have an i7-870 and an Asrock motherboard. That Lynnfield platform worked really well, but it was not SLI/Crossfire friendly due to a restricted number of PCI-E lanes. Just one video card is good to go though.
I kept mine AIO water cooled the whole time that I was using it. It was always up to whatever I threw at it.
I've been considering using it as a Linux PC.

Seriously, find a motherboard. Might even want to consider: Intel i5 & Xeon Barebones Deals

(I'm making the assumption that you're in the USA)
That CPU is only a good deal if you can get a motherboard for it or if you plan to re-sell it on e-bay. Otherwise, I'd recommend going with something like this GIGABYTE GA-B85M-Gaming 3/G3258 combo that you can get for $97 after MIR. That would put you in a current generation motherboard and you could upgrade the CPU latter.

Core i7 920 are just the best stuff. They were kinda affordable back then and they still pack some badass punch. They are also insanely lively to overclock. 2,6GHz stock and majority of people run them at 4GHz and beyond. That's some proper boost and with 4 cores and 8 threads, it's still a very capable CPU. I've bought this CPU and replaced like 5 graphic cards in the meanwhile. Only thing that Ive done was upgrade of RAM from 6GB to 18GB (by buying extra 12GB kit) just because it was cheap enough. It's 5 years old and majority of people don't have brand new machines that are this powerful.

you should find out which xeon it was
depending on the Xeon you could get more Bang for your buck than I7 (and possibly more cores)

as I told before, my first i7 is this 870 that I'm still using, I see minimal differences between my i7's, they all are pretty strong for several tasks, including gaming, also my loved 870 despite its old age

I wish it belongs to me completely [belongs to the office, ] for putting it into a Gigabyte motherboard, watercooling and decent video card,

The 880 should have ~175% the performance at similar clock speeds.

Basically the only problem is finding a motherboard, once you get that, you should be set for a good budget rig.

First Core i7's were the 9xx. The 8xx generation came almost a year later... Not to mention they aren't even LGA1366... Meaning they don't have triple channel memory, just dual channel...

i was talkin about single-threaded performance where athlon 860k beats yours i7 1st generation while costs ~same money, also board(fm2+) is much more easier to find/replace
what will you do if your board for i7 880 will broke someday(or will be some problems with lan/audio)?
also, both 880 and mobo for it wont have any warranty(too old)
