Have they always used the same numbers for beta and whql? I noticed recently there was a 15.2 that was both. And now this 15.5, of which there's a beta too. Not to mention that beta doesn't support 300 series(or did I miss that?). Maybe I'm trippin' again. But I could've swore they never used to do that. Seems strange to me.

EDIT: Ummm...15.15. So that explains this one. BUT there's FOR SURE a 15.2 beta AND a 15.2 WHQL. Yes, the 15.2 WHQL is for W10 only...but still. They shouldn't be doing that. Just confuses things.

I seem to remember that the reason for AMD not releasing WHQL drivers, is because they dont want to pay Microsoft to tell them, that their driver works.

That's hardly the case... They clearly mark their drivers "beta." Not "release quality, just unsigned"

For legal/liability reasons. WHQL certification costs money and AMD isn't exactly gushing with cash right now. It probably came down to releasing WHQL drivers less frequently or laying people off. They wisely went with the former. They'll release WHQL drivers when they feel they need to but otherwise, there isn't much point. I mean, look at most computers out there: they haven't seen a driver update since the OEM installed it. The 14.12 and 15.2 WHQL fulfills that role well. It's only enthusiasts that care about the drivers in between and they're not afraid to use beta. It is win-win for AMD.

I'm kind of surprised Windows 10 isn't mentioned though.

As W1zzard said earlier though, the WHQL cert isn't what costs the money. That's nothing. It's the internal Q&A and testing they do at AMD to certify it will work as intended, vs beta's where they come with big disclaimers about how there is no warranty.

From [H] http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1865618:

The Catalyst 15.15 drivers (windows 7, 8) features:
- FPS Targeting:
The ability to save power by setting a maximum FPS target
- Virtual Super Resolution: The ability to downscale a game from a high resolution to a lower resolution, giving a user higher-quality textures in game (also known as supersampling)
- Performance optimizations: Adding game performance optimizations to AMD R9 Fury X and other graphics cards.

Catalyst 15.20 (Windows 7, 8, 10) features:
- Catalyst Uninstaller:
Allows users to uninstall their AMD catalyst drivers cleanly, so new drivers can be installed without incident
- OpenCL 2.0 optional features: Multiple performance and feature additions
- FreeSync + CrossFire: The ability to run FreeSync dynamic screen refresh technology with multiple GPUs in CrossFire mode.

Catalyst 15.20 Windows 10 specific features:
- HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec): Enables quality streaming and 4K experiences
- DirectX 12: Support for the low-level efficient graphics API for Windows 10
- Windows 10 WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Lab): AMD’s latest driver release (15.20) will be WHQL and WHQL for Windows 10 as well.

Also AMD is bringing support for HDR monitors to the Radeon 300 series. Support for colors up to 16 bpc or 16-bit color.

This IIRC the actual cost of having a driver signed is a few hundred.

Bangs head on desk...

Well looks like 15.20 is what I am waiting for (CFX + Freesync).

It still does cost more in multiple areas to do (Like you said).

Personally as long as they test it for functionality then I personally do not care. So far they have not let me down as far as drivers for a very long time so I have never cared one bit about WHQL certification.

Just for shits and giggles has anyone tried this driver on the R9 290's?

I'm interested in the fps setting for lower over all power usage. I couldn't see why it wouldn't work. If I were home I'd give it a shot to see if it actually works but in the mean time has anyone?

I wanted to try them on my HD7950, but with broken DXVA and the need to copy 3 DLL files to folder of every app that requires DXVA is just too much of a hassle. I'll just wait for AMD to release proper working driver...

I used to edit my registry and XML config to enable all the cool stuff that the drivers had but didn't enable as it was being tested.

You can still do the same. Enable temporal AA, force DXVA.

Ive got 290s and might be able to steal a fee minutes this evening to give it a whirl, but I had to pause during the WCG challenge....

Anything in particular that you're looking for (games and/or settings)? I'm always plugged in for power usage readout so thats no biggie ;)

Well downloaded the driver but only 3 items were in the list to install and the install went through but didnt work.. either AMD yanked the driver or I got a dud

No, no don't quit folding for me bro, really its cool.

I've got a monitor also for watching real time wattage draw ;)

I'm just tinkering is all, and thought Hey lets try these drivers and see if they work..

Sadly all I get is this,

And with the normal driver I get this,

Are you 290 owners removing the drivers or just installing over top of the 290 driver?

If your device ID isn't in the .inf it will not update.

you can extract the drivers, and then copy the .inf line for the 390 and replace your device ID so it will install the new drivers.
