for the first time since buying my maximus VI, I started getting a swishing noise coming through my speakers. after trying a couple of things it turned out to be caused by one of the intel c-states. but I know what you mean about having a bad week. a lady ran into the back of my jag whilst I was reversing.
she was speeding and couldn't stop in time but I still had to pay for her damage or else lose my no claims. so I lost £350 one day before the new gpu's came out this week. that's why ive only bought one new card.

anyway try searching for asus sound problems and c-states. that should bring up the fix. then try doing what I did. I know we had different issues but you never know...

Yes I have the front panel connected. I did not think of that causing the problem.
AFAIK I have stepping disabled, but I will check to be sure.

I have no advice for you (a few good ones were given already) but i do have very bad jokes:

The game you were trying to show to friend was World of Warcraft ,wasn't it? Yes it was.
You see the game is so incredibly lame, computers have created a symbiotec form of self defence against it. There is no hardware or software failure, just your PC trying to protect you from WoW.

It was Skyrim, but I'm not allowed to post pictures of my install here as they would all be NSFW :D

Update
Disconnected the front panel audio, no change.
Turned cstates off, no change.

Update 2
To be clear everything is working great, except the onboard audio. I'm probably just going to buy one of these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZT7RE4/?tag=tec06d-20 as there is no free room for a pci/pcie sound card.

I ordered a USB sound card. It will be interesting to see what the quality of the built in mics are. I have seen onboard audio fail before, and the best option was a sound card.
