Anything that takes DVI and Analog Audio Input and Outputs HDMI

I've got a mini-ITX motherboard that only has DVI, VGA, and 3.5mm Stereo Audio. I want to use it as an HTPC with HDMI. I have a standard passive DVI to HDMI adapter, but it only output video. I need something that will convert and combine the analog audio into HDMI.

I've sound some devices that do it, but they are super expensive. I'm looking for something on the cheap.

i dont think cheap devices exist for that. you might be able to find optical SPDIF -> HDMI cheaper.

Can you output component? I have a device that converts component video (and RCA audio) to HDMI I'd sell you cheap.

I don't know how many or what models, but some video cards can output audio to a TV using the DVI port. I used to have a Zotac 630I ITX that would output audio using the included DVI>HDMI adapter.

Yeah, the cheap part is the problem. If I have to spend just as much as buying a new motherboard and processor, there isn't much point in it.

Unfortunately no SPDIF out either.

No component, DVI and VGA only. I could convert the VGA to Component then HDMI, but I've got VGA in on the TV so I could just use that if I wanted analog video.

Yeah, I took a shot when I got the motherboard in hopes that I'd get lucky and that would work, but unfortunately it didn't. :cry:

Luckily I got it for basically free.

Why not just drop in a video card with an HDMI port? Not an option with mini itx?

Modern graphics cards (like Nvida cards since Fermi or so) do "HDMI audio over DVI", so you just need a simple DVI-HDMI cable.

Was about to suggest the same. Yup, that's what you need. I have concerns though that the audio remains analog and not converted to digital. It really needs to convert it to digital to work. It is also limited to 1920x1080 when it should be able to handle 2560x1600 (DVI-D Dual Link).

Monoprice has it slightly cheaper:

It produces 2-channel, uncompressed LPCM digital audio from the 2-channel analog input.

That's fully compliant with HDMI standard.

Yes, it is a reclaimed board from an HP. Don't hate, it was free!

The BIOS is shit, no options to enable/disable any feature. And the GPU doesn't even seem to have a built in audio device. Even though I'm sure I've had other boards with the E1-1200 that did have the built in audio device on the GPU. I think HP just disabled it. Stupid HP!

Yeah, but my experience with them in the past has been...meh. They didn't have the grunt to do HD video.

Wonder why you can't select HD audio in the Windows mixer, since the GPU supports digital audio. Perhaps they didn't wire it into the dvi connector. The board doesn't even have a S/PDIF connector , so there might be no way to get a digital audio signal at the first place, let alone forward it to somewhere. Some TVs allow you to select an analog audio input (usually a 3.5mm jack) with a HDMI video signal, but if that's not an option, then yes, you would need to buy an "expensive" converter dongle, which would cost more than the whole thing

Well ADCs (analog to digital converters) are a rare breed so I don't think you'll find DVI + stereo -> HDMI any cheaper, unfortunately.

Have you investigated replacing the board with one that has an HDMI out that is compatible with the current processor? If you can find one, it would probably be your cheapest path.

The S/PDIF + DVI to HDMI converters aren't any cheaper, unfortunately.

Edit: S/PDIF can do 2 channel digital PCM. The signal should be compatible with HDMI so why are there no passive adapters? ...HDCP!?!

i think there are no separate audio and video streams in the traditional way of speaking, so it's not like you would find two audio "pins" on the HDMI cable, what you could just hook up to.

my TV's HDMI 4 has a 3.5mm analog input. i use that to avoid issues with HDMI cutting out after sleep mode, while still letting the TV utilise my external speakers.

For some reason I thought it had a dedicated pin or two for audio. Probably because DVI doesn't have audio support and the best way HDMI could support audio with backwards compatibility would be by way of dedicated audio wires/pins. I give HDMI way too much credit when it is not due.

Windows doesn't even detect the GPU's audio device. HP probably disabled it because they didn't wire it to anything... Again, stupid HP!
