nvidia gtx 960

I'm using a 7870 2gb card currently and whatever it may be since the last BF4 patch crash a lot. It seems to be amd card users, driver or whatever idk.

So, I am pondering getting a gtx 960 4gb. Price seems reasonable too. The 128 bit deal doesn't seem to be an issue with these cards. Anyone have one or thoughts.

I posted this on the bf4 forums as well, you guys are more helpful. I just want to play bf4 without issues.

My only thought, and the religious card zealots will argue with me, but I do not honestly believe the 960 has the GPU power to make use of 4GB. The 128 bit, even with compression is just not enough either to effectively use 4GB.

Alright, putting on my fire-retardent suit in preparation for getting blasted, LOL.

EDIT: Nothing wrong with the 2GB variant though! I recommend it.

A GTX 960 is only about 20% faster than an HD 7870. I don't know about you, but when I change of GPU I prefer to change for a big improvement. If you can afford a GTX 970 go for it, it is such a better card than the 960 (+ the massive overclocking potential).

If you are looking for cheap NVIDIA, that seems to be the opposite of what's going on... can't really reccomend anything but the 970 from a cost/performance perspective in their lineup. That or the 980, but that's a slightly worse bargain just to get some extra vram IMO.

Truly, 3.5GB vram issue aside, the 970 is one hell of a card, and very good in the price to performance ratio. I speak from personal experience.

3.5GB is still way more than needed. At 1080P 2.5GB is enough, unless you play Skyrim or GTA with a hell lot of mods.

Honestly, my 660 ran BF4 very well on 1080p. Not sure how a 650 would run but anything at or higher than a 660/670 will run just fine.

What issues? I play BF4 and Hardline quite often on my trio and have not had any issues. Are you using Mantle or what specifically and what driver version as I am using the latest beta and have not had a crash in that game for quite a long time (Both 4 and Hardline).

As for the card choice, well I agree with @rtwjunkie as there is no reason to buy the 4gb version unless you really want to try SLI (Which at that point I would buy a GTX 970 before doing that).

I get c0000005 ctd randomly. Using dx11 15.6 beta.Since last patch been happening.On the bf4 forums many have similar crash issues and most of them use amd cards. This doesn't happen with gtav and thats more demanding for my system.

I will be buying the 970 within a week or so.

c0000005 is caused by drivers or bad ram.

If your ram is overclocked, set it to default, it might solve the issue.

Also, did you try to use Mantle instead of dx11?

I just formatted other day and fresh installed windows and this still happens , so could be the ram.
running ram at 833 from 800. I will run default and try.
I don't use mantle as I need sweetfx for color correction. Otherwise cant see anything in game.

Need to wait a few days to test as using my old backup card 9600gt.
I cleaned my 7870 and the thermal pads were all disintegrated, so waiting for my pad order.

Using my old 5770 for now. I played a few rounds this morning and got that c0000005 error again.

I had dropped my ram to defaults previously too.

I have to try memtest been forever since I used it. Also I have to figure out what driver I used before was 13 or 14 something.

I found them on a drive 14.9's

If you're limited to the price range of a 960 4GB, get a 280X, but if you can afford to step up to the $300 and above range, should have said so to begin with. That is 970 territory.

That said, a 290X is a very sweet deal right now and start at just $280. They don't have the 3.5GB cap in some games, which can cause stutter.

Personally, at $280 I'd be very temped to get a 290X instead, because you'd probably never notice the slightly lower power it has compared to the 970, but you WOULD def notice the stutter in 3.5GB capped games like Shadow of Mordor.

This of course all depends on budget, games played and res used. Going forward it's hard to say how many VRAM heavy games there will be, or what res you'll want to play on. So it's worth considering.

Well from what it seems my mobo (4 phase vrm)was undervolting my cpu. It was a weird combination of everything going bad at once.

For now everything seems stable. Waiting on my 7870 from rma still.
