I wouldn't call it a waste of money... that is being overly dramatic. If the guy is ready and doesn't want to wait, there is no reason to buy now. We don't all have to be on the bleeding edge of performance. ;)

You totally right BUT: if you can wait 4 weeks and then get a brand new sparkling system with latest and greatest then buying old gen right now is a waste of money.
And the main reason for this: If you wait a month and get the newest hardware then youll get both the latest and greatest AND you wont have to upgrade that soon.
For example if someone upgrades every 3 generations then by waiting a month he saves a generation :)

I dont want to sound like a spoiled rich guy (im the opposite), but living in a country where everything is usually x2 the cost in USA and minimum wage is x2 less, I learned that in the long run 10,20,30 or even 50$ does not make or break a buy for me.
I always found strange when people would actually wait to save 10,20,30$. But thats maybe my 'I want it NOW' nature, when i decide that i want something ill burn through solid rock just to get it ASAP without looking at the prices.
Just like i got additional GTX970 for my........... CrossFire mobo :) 2 weeks ago (Yeah im a moron, I know that)

5% performance boost at $80 more. Not adding in new socket boards and DDR4 memory. Don't be an elitest on the "newest" thing. Not everyone can spend massive amounts of money on a rig.

Just to let you know that Skylake should come out in August, buying a PC now is just a waste of money.

And next year we should see AMD Zen, and wider DDR4 support, and Nvidia Pascal, and..............................

Every minute of every day there's something new on the horizon. With that mindset you'll be waiting your entire life to build a PC! If you need a gaming PC then build one, or buy one used if you're worried about depreciation on new hardware like Viruzz. ;P

1. You have no idea if its 5%, 10% or 25%, its not out yet and its not just a simple revision but a whole new design AND 14nm
2. You obviously missed his list of parts :) By your logic his 1.5K USD parts list is already elitist.

We're trying to help him by getting similar items at lower costs.
The 840 is an older SSD, yet still very valid.
4790k is been out for over a year.
980TI is the second strongest single-GPU card out there, it's obvious for someone to get it if they want the best and not spent $1k.

So getting Skylake CPU, Z170 Mobo its elitist? BTW there are DDR3 motherboards for Skylake so you keep your DDR3 ram and get the CPU benefits
Dont you think that he will save more money in the long run if he gets Skylake?
If he gets Haswell he will be 2 generations behind: Broadwell and Skylake and next year he will be 3 generations behind.
But if he waits a month he will have the best for same price, maybe just ta bit more.

BTW, Skylake will have TONS of PCIe lanes, USB 3.1, PCIe storage, M.2 storage and everything will be directly connected through PCie 3.0 to the CPU unlike what we have right now (16 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU used by GPU and 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes from the chipset going throughout slow interconnect for everything esle)

Of course its just IMHO..

Im waiting for Skylake, right now I have i5-4690 (non K)

A 2600k is still a powerful processor, yet two generations behind. You make it sound as if we're taking huge steps in performance when a new generation comes out. I see people on this forum still rocking 870's and 920's while doing just as well as 3770k's and 4770k's. Just because it's two generations old doesn't mean it's pathetically weak and useless like you make it sound.

4790k is good enough for gaming and OP will be able to game on it for years to come. End of debate.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Why are we worried about generational upgrades? Who cares. If the performance is there and isn't putting a glass ceilng on things, its fine. The diffference in performance to skylake will likely be the typical 5-15% we are used to seeing.

PCIe lanes are a non issue for most. Even with dual GPU cards, 8x/8x is 1-2% loss...

Z97 has m2., pcie storage, USb3.1... etc.

If he can wait, go for it. If he is ready, go for it.

PCIe lanes are very important, the Z97 have just 8 PCIe gen 2 lanes for everything it uses.
M2 on Z97 is slow its no different from sata (depends on the board, some allocate more PCie lanes)
also the DMI is gen3...

Basically everything is going to be connected to the chipset and CPU as fast as technically possible, Z170 chipset is actually better then X99!
Even the HDMI si going to be HDMI 2.0, not even the latest and greatest video cards have HDMI 2.0
The build in graphics is going to improve, Broadwell on-board graphics is exactly twice as fast as Haswell, so Skylake should be even faster, no?

Please read this article: http://hexus.net/tech/news/mainboard/80342-intels-skylake-100-series-chipset-revealed/

The x4 m.2 slots are way faster than the sata express. It really doesn't make a huge difference my friend. Lanes break down in the same way for video cards, there is just more for peripherals. Not really a worry now... unless you run with a slew of peripherals... to which you go X99 anyway. :)

I wouldn't wait explicitly for that reason.

Haha this thread has done way more then I thought it would. The ranger board is what I have already, I forgot to mention that. My buddy had orderd it for his pc a while back and ended up not even using it. But yeah so far I see changing the ssd, possibly the gpu and def will get the i5 instead. But I'm not even plan on pulling the trigger until August because I'm in the army and won't be at my unit until around then.
