Help me choice VIRUS Software

Wich Virus software should i go for ?

Have used AVG for 10 years, but the new version, seem's to overide stuff,+i cant kill prosses and stuff when i dont need it.

Saw on a voting pole that AVAST, had the most votes.
Is that something to check into ?

Don't need it to overide everything, Has to be free. And usable.

Or should i just go without virus program, infact does virus program's help at all ? maybe a stupid question.

aVast is surly a contender but i find it much more annoying these days asking me to install google browser crap a long with other unneeded prompts.

Avast Free is a good choice, to me AVG Free hasn't been in the game since 2 or 3 years, their detection rate is lower and the impact on the system is higher then from Avast or Avira (which are to me the best 2 right now)

But Avira also has intrusive popup ads (they try to sell you their paid version). Avast also has ads, but not as intrusive as Avira.

To summarize: Avast is the one that has the least impacts on the system, but also has little worse detection rate compared to Avira.

So you choose, but please, get rid of AVG.

Avira is tested by me in many PCs for over 5 years and almonst trouble free. A free firewall is good to be even more secure though. Comodo Internet Security might be a good comb too as I have used it for 2 years now on a pc without any problem.

i dont understand why avast keeps coming up, it's always regular people that dont know anything that keep using it, just like bitcomet... forget avg while we're at it

there is other 'malware' that isnt a 'virus', so you might need more than one tool (or just know what you're doing on the computer)

keep UAC enabled, browsers up to date, dont let flash automatically run, get rid of java unless you need it, disable java from browsers entirely

Avast keeps coming up because it's a very competent AV, especially with good browsing habits. I use the Pro version myself...I have for 10 years now.

I also use Bitdefender Free on my HTPC, and I highly recommend it. It's unobtrusive, very intelligent in what it blocks, and scans in the background only during free CPU time, pausing where it was at if the CPU gets engaged enough to need the cycles it is using. It also updates automatically. It's always scored well, and is probably the easiest AV to use.

These days, good antiviruses are more properly called anti-malware. The AV makers have recognized for a number of years viruses are only a small part of the problem, and their products act accordingly.

I've found it's almost impossible to use many websites without current Java OR Flash.

i concure .... (not even surprised) i use Avast on all my PC, mom's PC and friend's PC ... never got any issue with it, it prompt you to install chrome crap? then just click "no" and for other unwanted prompt? well you can always refuse, too complicated?
also once in silent mode : no more pop up or voice during a game session and for the pop up about updating and such ... i don't mind as i use the free version ... (tho i am pondering on getting the Pro version since a moment now.)

yes Avast keep poping up the list, because it's a competent AV , and i also agree on Bitdefender (i might take that one for my Laptop, tho for the moment i just try windows own solution for a laugh)

Java has nothing to do with Javascript.

Avast is good for a free option (some paid ones like Kaspersky are way better however), but if you have safe computing habits and keep UAC enabled, you can do without any AV at all. If you're unsure, I'd recommend grabbing Avast. Bitdefender could also be worth a try, it generally scores well in tests.

Windows Defender consistently scores worse than other anti-malware software in AV-Comparatives' tests. However it also has a very low system impact - so it's good to keep it enabled if you don't want to install separate AV software.

well i am quite surprised to see two gas factory as Norton and Kapersky mentioned ... any computer i got with them pre-installed where ... fine ... for 1 week ... unlike with Avast or Avira (who both are free and rule them out easily )
paying for something that actually is worse than a free solution, baffle me ... at last if i pay for something it will be Avast Pro or Bitdefender

In my experience with computers Norton 360 has been the best antivirus there is as far as antivirus software that you gotta pay yearly to keep it up to date.

For me Kaspersky is one of the best Antivirus, if I am not wrong I am using Kaspersky since 2005.

I can't remember the last time I saw a virus. With W8 you don't need one. I use Kasperski. But if you insist on being cheap then MSE. Don't trust Norton too much bad history. And they sell your personal info

got to agree Kapersky is the lesser bad if you have to choose between Norton and that one .... but they shouldn't be a choice at all with Avast, Avira (again free an do better and less gas factory) or even Bitedefender (for paid one) around ...

I get Kas for like $10 a year. I haven't use a free one in a few years

i never spent a $ since 1999 and i never had any virus problems with avast but i think i will take the pro license i tried some other (which explain why i label them gas factory...)... and not talking about the soo called conspiracy about : it's the society that handle the paid AV that make viruses and labell their AV as the "only one who can handle it" when it surface (totally not true ... i know)

well yes i used that one .... until it went ... gas factory, did the original developer sold his work and a band of goofs like symantec got their hands on it? or did they just fubared all once they passed from free to paid one?
tho it's still a good one ... i guess the just took example on the other bad one for some useless features.

for me a AV need to be a protection not a hindrance, Kap Norton and such ... are the only one i got problems with (less with kap) and interruption due to them (and not specially for a real virus, most of the time a false positive) in games or during a critical time.

Yeah, since 2006 for me and had very few problems with it.

It's a shame that a few years ago it completely borked on my mum's PC and reinstalling and troubleshooting it didn't help. It was just that one installation though and I'd have fixed it in the end. Unfortunately she got so pissed off about it that she didn't want to touch Kaspersky again and moved to Norton. I try to get her back onto Kaspersky every so often but it's no go.

Have you seen the interface on Norton? Basic in the extreme, so it can't be configured very much at all. Still, it's behaved itself very well over the last five years or so.
