CM Hyper 212 Evo + FX-8320

I want to build myself a second rig for backup and just to play around with.

I'm getting a FX-8320 CPU and want to overclock it.

Will the Hyper 212 Evo handle the FX-8320?

I'm not looking for a massive overclock, I'll be happy with 4.2GHz.

That could depend on more on the motherboard you choose to pair with it. In a well ventilated case with a good mothetboard you could achieve that overclock easily(so long as the processor cooperates), but a lot of 970 boards(and below) could have excessive heat/insufficient voltage problems (instability) with an overclocked 8 core processor.

Yeah the Evo will be fine, should get 4.5 at least. As mentioned above don't get a budget board, eg Asrock Extreme3 or MSI 970 G43/45. You can still find a decent 970 that won't break the bank.

I built two rigs with that CPU/cooler and let me say that you can get a decent overclock and keep cool. Good luck!

It makes some noise at full speed but does well for a moderate OC. The EVO has a High Static pressure fan

well, 990FX chipset is pretty decent for amd FX 83XX processors, you ca easily get 5.0GHZ o that board, about the cooling, get the cooler master 212EVO and a good thermal paste for example arctic MX4, a well ventilated case can help too, nice intake fans and also exhaust ones can make the difference over there, a proper airflow I mean,

I run 24/7 4.5ghz on my FX 8350 + hyper 212 EVO @ stock voltages..... It should do the job cooling with a mild OC.... The max OC i have ran on air was 4.7ghz..... anything higher would require water cooling.

well everything seems to be fine, just try to add a decent airflow to that case with case fans … intake and exhaust, also side panel fan is pretty important !

Fwiw disable Turbo and APM when OC'ing or the cores will throttle. AMD Turbo is more of a handicap than help because it's chained down by the TDP limit.

what's the deal with the 24GB of RAM? 8+8+8 or what? Why not take 2x8GB out of that for your own rig, which only has 8GB at the moment and could afford an upgrade to 16GB?

I recommend replacing it with a CM jetflo fan for the 212 evo it runs cooler and less noise.

My 212 evo's fan went coo coo and started to make an annoying noise so i replaced the fan on it with a CM Jetflo blue LED one and it's much nicer, lower temps and noise!

My main rig is fine with 8GB, I never even come close to filling that up even with games.

I plan to have a few VMs running 24/7, as well as a few other VMs I'll use from time to time, so it needs the RAM.

I want to set up a basic web server that I can play around on.

I want an Ubuntu VM as well so I can start playing with Linux and learn more about it.

I also want a throw away Windows VM for testing...suspicious things...

I plan to give the Server 2 cores and 4GB of RAM, the Ubuntu machine 4 cores and 8GB of RAM, and probably 2GB to any other VM I create.

I'll leave Ubuntu full screen, so any time I use the computer I'll be greeted with Ubuntu and use it as much as possible.

I'll probably stick with the stock fan for a while, but switch to a Noctua fan eventually, I've put some in my main rig and I love them, quiet and good performance.

Great cooler @a modest price for all but the most demanding cooling requirements....

i can do 5 on my fx-8320 but gets hot on prolonged use. i can run it at 4.8 fine. but i kept it at 4.5, because its plenty fast enough as is.
