Boy have I ever got a story to tell. I don't know really where the best category for this thread would be but yeah anyway here it goes. The fourth channel on my Hardcano 13 hasn't been working all of the time, and today it quit working completely. So tonight I decided to take it apart and look for any bad solder points etc. I see none so I put it back together and try it out hoping maybe it was just something sitting bad or whatever. It still doesn't work once I hook it back up. So at this point I (stupidly) decide to turn off the computer and then take apart the Hardcano 13 and run it open with the computer on and take voltage measurements. I measure the first one and I get between 11.5-12.2 which is right. Now I'm a pretty shakey person so apparently I must have slipped or something and I hear a *POP* and then start smelling burnt electronics. At this point my computer has already been shut off thanks to my OCZ PowerStream. I unhook the Hardcano from the computer and sit for a minute or two praying no electronics besides the Hardcano (if even that) got fried. So I turn it back on and I see that my CPU fan (plugged into the motherboard since the Hardcano was "under construction") wasn't spinning. So I try hooking it into another motherboard slot and it doesn't work. So I think all the motherboard fan ports are fried. That's okay though because I don't use them. As far as everything else it works fine, thank God.
So at this point I decide to grab an old 250w PSU I had sitting around and jumpstarting it and work on the Hardcano from there. As soon as I turn on the PSU I hear another *POP* and then start seeing smoke coming off a chip in the Hardcano. Seeing as though this all happened in less than a second I do nothing and continue watching in panic. A second or so later a 1" flame starts coming up and I begin screaming like a school girl in panic. Mainly because it wasn't supposed to catch on fire and I was working on the CARPETED floor of my room, and we all know that carpet and fire don't mix. I immediately blow out the flame and turn off the PSU.
Sooooooo it looks like Aaron needs a new fan controller, and it's pretty safe to say I won't be getting a knew one of these via warrenty LOL! So if you have any suggestions as to what I should get please be my guest and feel free to share.
Here are some I have in mind:
One. This one I've had my eye on for awhile.
Two. Pretty much the same thing, haven't looked in to why it's so much cheaper.
Three. Nothing wrong with sticking to what you know works.
Four. I like this Enermax the most. You get the most bang for your buck. Controls six fans, it's black, and has a blue lit screen. What more do you need?
