NVIDIA Recalls Select Shield Tablets over Fire Hazard

NVIDIA today announced a voluntary recall of its SHIELD 8-inch tablets that were sold between July 2014 and July 2015, which the company will replace. NVIDIA has determined that the battery in these tablets can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The recall does not affect any other NVIDIA products.

NVIDIA is asking customers to visit this page for information on how to obtain a replacement device. NVIDIA is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet, except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data. Consumers will receive a replacement tablet after registering to participate in the recall. NVIDIA is coordinating with appropriate governmental agencies to ensure that the recall follows established industry practices.

This sounds like them trying to get out ahead of any bad news stories and try for positive PR for a change.

I guess we are talking about a few hundred consoles. Nvidia in the past haven't shown to like recalls and accept that something gone wrong with their hardware.

I feel like there is some kind of obvious conclusion to draw here, granted don't exactly know how to word it succinctly.


Qualcomm, Apple etc all aim toward a very specific power envelope/battery size/form factor, which nvidia clearly exceeds. Qualcomm has bashed nvidia's tegra designs for this very reasoning before. Not just for phones, but also tablets.

The Shield tablet has a relatively huge battery for it's size, yet also worse battery life (let alone comparatively) than many other options. Conclusion: It draws more power than most anything else in that form-factor.

I feel like somewhere within this story is a 'Hey nvidia...we told you so'.

You have to appreciate this news is manna from heaven for these guys, the usual suspects I like to call them, beyond one or two that appear to be AWOL, they have all turned up and delivered.

So you're accusing Qualcomm and Apple of throwing stones in glass houses?
LG confirms the Snapdragon 810 has battery problems

QC's 810 has high profile overheating and battery consumption issues...so much so, that it has effectively been shelved for the time being....while Apple has it's own recall issues.
Both QC and Apple have significantly larger R&D budgets than Nvidia, so what's their excuse?

Some 8800GTX cards had a wrong surface mount resistor if I remember correctly. And those 8600M GPU's were likely to break.

awww drat, mine is a Y01... oh well that mean a shiny new one as replacement (tho i got one without the infamous cracking edge issue and never got any problem in 10 month of uses )

Even the best can fail, a bad batch is just that.

And when they do fail OMG they fail.

I am just glad only battery's that failed on me have been in RC cars hate to think how that shit feels on your lap when it goes off. although they are ten times worse in RC cars.

Putting Lithium in a battery will always have a chance of bad things(tm) happening. It's just a matter of how likely, and how bad.

The worst (from an economic perspective) to date has to be Boeing's issues.
