Lag is going to be a significant problem, especially for FPS games.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with it, but it might suit some people depending on what they like to play.

Its not a console. Its just to stream your steam from your desktop to a TV.

^This, it's meant for those whom already have a decent gaming PC in the den or other room to be able to game in the living room without dragging in your PC or buying another.

That said, it really will only facilitate those comfortable with the Steam Controller or other gamepad, unless you somewhat defeat the minimalist clutter approach by using a wireless keyboard and mouse.

This will all depend on your home network (Not ISP). Don't expect good game play on 100mb ports or wireless G. This will take a gig network to bring full potential.

Hi I just got a new 4k tv would that make any difference, I just thought it might be something to try, I have fast fibre 76mbps.

^If you mean 4K streaming, it may be a while before any devices stream games in 4k, and a lot of devices don't even stream 4k movies yet. I know the Nvidia Shield streams 4k movies, but it only plays Android games.

It's too soon to be buying into 4k movie streaming unless you have a Netflix account though, and it's pretty limited even with them.

That's pretty good ISP speed, and it may be enough, but be aware, if you've never had a Smart TV before, they can be painfully slow to navigate apps with.

He should be getting it soon. I actually looked for Android phone apps (he has a Galaxy 5) that have Smart TV remotes with KB, but couldn't find any. You'd think someone would have made one by now.

You would be surprised. I had a coworker test the new xbox streaming out on a 100MB switch and he was getting some lag but still playable just annoying but when he switched over to a gig switch it was buttery smooth. Only have to test this out for yourself.

I can understand that, and I'm not surprised, but there's too many variables involved to use that one scenario as an overall example of what to expect.

Another thing that we'll have better knowledge of when a vast database of consumer experiences trickles in. What you're talking about would no doubt depend on the game, hardware, house layout, distances, and how well your TV upscales.

The upscaling alone could just end up causing too much lag, esp input lag. Plus most sets don't really upscale all that well. Even Sony, whom claim to have THE best upscaling algorithm and texture library, tend to have issues with details disappearing from the screen in the upscaled picture. Examples include, white caps disappearing from ocean waves, items on a beach disappearing, even freckles on a close up of a person's face.

And this is after many generations and iterations of upscaling versions. Sony's been at it as long if not longer than anyone.

This just uses Steam in Home Streaming. You can already test how bad the lag will be if you really want. First of all, it only streams at 30FPS. The game runs at whatever framerate your computer is capable of, but the stream is encoded at 30FPS. I don't think Wireless G is enough, but N should be as long as you have a decent connection, and 100Mbps is easily enough.

It would be more accurate to say compressed to 30 FPS, but encoded for a 60 FPS decode. Much like DTS or DD audio is compressed to stereo, but encoded in 5.1 to be decoded at the user end.

No, because that would mean the user at the end would be seeing 60 Frames of gameplay per second. They aren't, they are seeing 30.

Look into what? And its Valve, not Steam. Steam is a program developed by Valve.

Its for streaming. With Steam in home streaming that box is almost useless if you have more than one system, say a main rig and a htpc connected to your TV. Just stream from your main rig to the htpc. But then again I'd rather not stream a game to play regardless.

Only 30? I'd assumed 60fps. That makes it even more untenable for anything other than stuff which doesn't really much on animation eg chess, or maybe one of those turn-based strategy games. Even a simple 80s style platformer would suffer at 30fps.

Do you know what the framerate of PS4 Remote is? If it's 30fps like NT was talking about here, then it's pretty useless.
