Question about the 2700k and 2600k.

So I keep getting these two confused, because I always thought they both are i7s, which I got a gold star for that, but I didn't know what the difference was. Reading around, is the 2700k a refresh of the 2600k? Like the 4790k is to the 4770k?

The 2700k came out shortly after the 2600k IIRC. It's just binned higher and tends to overclock a little better.

They did the same with the i5-2550k and the 2500k .... better binned chips, no other differences.

No IGP on the 2550K. But that's not really a functional difference for most of its users.

I wish there was a line of i7s that had no iGPU, because I don't feel like going Xeon and attempting to overclock those.

The 2550k had the igpu, it was just disabled. It was the same silicon. All you have is the 2011 and 2011-3 cpu's.

My 3820 costed 300 USD at the time which was cheaper than the 2600k and 2700k. I'm sure you can find some half-decent boards that don't MSRP as high as my P9X79 Deluxe did.

X99 motherboards are not good on price. Neither is DDR4.

I don't know if I got a good 3820 or if C2 was just a half decent revision but, check out the bus interface on GPU-Z. As I understood it, many SB-E chips simply didn't want to do PCI-E 3.0 but mine seems to take it like a champ. Don't mind me, I'm just here selling the chip I have that I'm surely biased towards.

Side note: Interesting... I wonder why my machine isn't boosting. 3.6Ghz versus 4.2Ghz would explain my drop in performance in benchmarks. Maybe I should double check them settings. Maybe Windows and it's UEFI support is messing with my stuff.

I don't think it is bias at all. I pride myself on being able to find great deals on hardware. I once had a 3930k I picked up here for $300 when they could still be purchased new. That cpu could also overclock to 4.8ghz before my watercooling was not enough to cool it. If I were to look for an i7 without a gpu, and wanted it cheap, I would look for a 3820 or better used.

That's about $639, while I would not write that off as cheap its good quality and not a terrible price for components and comparing it to a Z97 build with an i7 would only save about $150 (Without cheaping out considerably on board and parts) not to mention that's also without including rebates which would bring it down to about $100 dollars difference now. DDR4 has come down a lot in price recently from what it was at launch.

Ach but apples to apples man that X99E-ITX is not cheap but a Z97E-ITX is. Or at least it used to. All the good Z97 ITX boards are like, $170+ now. Oh well.

Does anyone know how SB's IPC actually stacks up to Haswell? There's always a lot of talk like "my 2600K hits 4.6/4.8/5.0/(insert random number here between 4.4 and infinity) so it is superior to your 4790K and you can go bawl about how you spent so much on a crappy CPU that doesn't overclock" but is it really comparable? Haswell made cache speed + branch prediction improvements over Ivy Bridge, and the 4790K after all is Intel's first consumer CPU to ship above 4GHz. There are still heavily single-threaded games out there that make it purely a battle of IPC, and there are some pretty significant differences in performance to be had between Haswell CPUs alone (Project Reality BF2 for one - 4460 @ 3.4GHz, 4160 @ 3.6GHz, 4790K @ 4.2GHz are very different).
