I have a defiant child who refuses to GTF off of his PC @ the time he has been told. I have set the internet to a blocking schedule , and tried all measures...but i was sitting here, having a coffee, and it occured to me that I might find some help if I posted it on TPU...so im here.

I wanna know if I can essentially install a script, or i guess it could be considered a malware, that will shut his PC down wether he likes it or not @ a certain time. is this a ridiculous question? it seems like it isnt to me, but ive been wrong about MANY things in my time. if you know of anything let me know please

thanks

^^this may work.
It seems i should mention that this is something that he will NOT want happening. So if it Can be disabled easily, he Will disable it. And for any of those who might help..this is a Dell optiplex 7020 that I purchased, as the child in question is 12Y/O , So this isnt a PC im trying to hack or anything, I own it, but he is simply a defiant Teenager now, and I want a solution that I can "set and forget" so to speak. He is proficient with PC's but not more than myself, he doesnt know the ins and out of windows, etc..so i feel like if it was something that didnt natively reside in windows he couldnt figure it out...Maybe.im just trying to figure this out.

Unless he's twelveteen, he aint a teen yet.
Show him who the parent is, lay the law down before it gets too late.

Dorset where else eh? >>> Thats ENGLAND<<<
IF All else fails
a Mains circuit breaker has two positions
1. on pc works
2. off well Does that need an explanation
And as Bill Would Recommend your Ups would give him time to shut down gracefully

I've got to say, you don't need a script.
1. You're the parent. Take charge now before he's an actual teen and you have no control at all because you didnt take it now.

2. It's technically your computer, not his. Don't need to play silly games with scripts.

This seems useful but you will have to hide the shortcut

but then again what is stopping him from hitting the power button and turn it on again.

Do you know where the circuit breaker for your house is? Know which switch is for your kid's room? You have a low-tech solution already. I have a 3 year old daughter and I can tell you that there is a time and a place for you to lay down the law and show that there are consequences to their actions. Make it 100% clear what those consequences are and don't deviate from them. Otherwise your child will learn that you're a push over and will get away with murder.

I should say I know this from having been a child and by having one myself. Don't say one thing and not follow through, that's the worst thing you can do.

With that said, my parents laid down the law with me but they were different times and different modes of ensuring compliance were not exactly illegal (spanking, corporal punishment.) I do think that a similar punishment needs to be inflicted. You may want to "ground" him from the computer. Pull it out of the wall and go hide it or lock it away. Let the kid cry it out and leave the monitor there as a reminder. Then give it back to him after a day or so and tell him that the worse he gets the longer he loses it.

Complication: If you child has ADD or ADHD, it's possible that negative consequences won't work. You may need to offer a more temping positive consequence. For example, being good and compliant might earn him money towards new hardware. Chores or things to motivate him to do what you need him (I'm assuming this is a boy,) without actually using the negative consequence of taking the computer away. Not all children react the same way, so you might want to consider what will be met with the least resistance and gradually work your way up from there. At least, that is what I would do.

So for example, you could have both. If he goes to bed when he should, he can earn a new graphics card or memory or something. If he doesn't, it gets taken away. Seems simple enough to me.

All in all, this isn't a computer question, it's a parenting question. A script might help you to ensure compliance in an already good child. If the child is misbehaving, a script won't fix that for you... as much as we wish it could. :)

Well... the more you deny the more he will want to have it...

I guess we all grew up without restrictions or other stuff... did actually many bad and dangerous things including explosives, stunts and simple evil doings.... countless hours on NES, PSX, PC etc :D

You have to think of something else tbh... like the only PC he can access is like from RaspberryPI...

If what he's doing requires an internet connection, some routers have the ability to let you block a MAC address at certain time(s) of the day.
