What will you use it for? At least they used to have a power saving feature which made it shut down very fast, which vastly increased the spin-up count.

Hello there, @Chapapa07

It really does depend on your intended storage purpose as @Frick mentioned.
The WD Green drive is designed for secondary storage usage in PCs or as a backup storage in external enclosures. It incorporates IntelliPower RPM which delivers significant power savings and solid performance, and that's why it spins down and looks slow compared to other desktop drives (especially those with 7,200 RPM). You can check this article from our KB that explains this difference: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=BLcCV2

Do you have any other drives in your system? Is it a primary or a secondary storage solution you are looking for?

Indeed, is for secondary storage, should I get it? or is there a better offer?

If it's green (or this may apply to any newer mechanical drives), it's power saving technology can be manipulated by a program such as HDDScan, which has a built-in script compiler.

My rule of thumb has been :

Green - Secondary storage, light to medium use - ONLY if power is an issue [it's also often the cheaper of their products]
Red - Server/File storage/Database 24/7 commercial use
Blue/Black - Performance, some stability benefits not found in Green, though not greater than the Red

That could be different these days, but it's what I go with.

I'd avoid anything green or blue, stick with red or black. Or better yet, get a Seagate and never have to worry about WD trying to screw you on the warranty.

@newconroer pretty much described them as they are. :) You might also want to take a look at this WD internal desktop comparison on our website: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=zvuUr8

It excludes the WD Red, though, because it's designed for RAID/NAS environments, but as it was already mentioned a lot of customers use it as a secondary data HDD as well. You can see more of its features here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=KpP1A1

I guess the WD Green would definitely be a good storage solution for you, if you access it rarely. But it really depends on what you define as a secondary storage - are you after the massive capacity, the speed or the overall performance of the secondary HDD? Do you plan to have any games/software installed on that hard drive? Any streaming? Or just massive storage for your files (photos/music/etc.)?

Just get what's on sale. Might as well get 3Tb they aren't much more. I have three Seagate 3Tb 7200 I've had for 3 years that run continually. No issues. But WD is also fine.

I totally forgot PURPLE.

I believe PURPLE is meant to have almost the same robustness as RED, yet is aimed at security surveillance markets. I am not certain what that implies - meaning that the drive has additional native encryption or a tamper proof casing?

I have a few greens... 2 of the 1.5tb and a 500

They are great for storage if you dont hammer them too much.

Also put your drives to sleep when not in use makes them last longer.

I doubt it has anything to do with encryption. It probably means it's optimized for multiple data streams, such as from multiple cameras.
