With my actual system I have 2 options: getting more ram, the 6Gb I have are not enough for some things I do.
Or get new CPU+RAM+Mobo combo, in this case Skylake would cost me a bit over 700€, even more for the x99 platform.

The performance jump from my i7 3770K is simply not worth it. Games see no benefits and honestly, only in benchmarks do we see any gains; Don't care about shaving 20 seconds off my Handbrake encode time.

Not to mention I have a Hackintosh, and as it stands now only 1 kext is needed for 100% functionality, everything else is native.

I'm still using my 4 year old i5 2500K without any complaints. I bumped the clock speed to 4x3.7GHz (I have bad VRM) only last month. Still, this is the first time in 20 years I haven't felt the need to upgrade CPU after all those years.

I voted no.. Not really interested in another 8threaded cpu at this point. My next upgrade will be something with proper 8cores (16threads), AMD Zen or Skylake-E / CannonLake-E..

My initial plan was with Haswell-E, but then there was only $$$$ 5960X model and 1-2 years too late :D

I was planning to upgrade to Skylake later this year, but seeing the reviews I decided to hold on that. Just ordered a better PSU and CPU cooler to see if I can push this system to last atleast another year.

At this point, honestly, in my case in particular, skylake would actually be more of a downgrade for my main gaming rig, and not really that much of an upgrade for most of my other rigs o_O

Idk, maybe Skylake-E would be a different story? But the CPU race has become so boring in the last 3 years, nothing excites me anymore as much as Sandy Bridge did... I usually migrate to the "tock" processors released by Intel, but this time it seems I'll be skipping a whole couple generations, and will wait for whatever comes after Kaby Lake :(

Still running i7-920 @ stock clock, which I might overclock a bit eventually. Can't justify $350 for Skylake + $150 for motherboard + new RAM given the little game experience improvement.

I do upgrade the GPU every other generation though and each time get a nice visual and FPS boost. Last upgrade was a GeForce 780Ti and SSD. Next upgrade will be a Pascal GPU + VR headmount display.

Interested, but the current prices have thrown it into the i7-5820K territory. For a very similar price I can get an extra 8 PCIe lanes and quad-channel memory. A mildly overclocked 5820K should still put out reasonable single-threaded performance for the life of the build.

Doesn't make sense to "upgrade" to 6700k when there's a SKU like the 5820k around.

Skylake's high end should have been 6 cores by now, it's probably never gonna be more than a quad because Intel would need to redesign the mainstream die.

Would be a massive downgrade for me tho, half the cores for roughly 5% IPC. No thanks.

That's an excellent point. 5820K isn't going to be much more than 6700K (maybe $40-60 at most) and the motherboard is about $20-40 more. The same memory works in both systems. 6700K has a 21% higher clockspeed and maybe 10-15% better IPC but two fewer cores. What you gain on the motherboard is quite monumental though (lots more SATA ports, double the DIMMs, etc.). At the same time, Haswell isn't brimming with the latest tech (e.g. PCIE 3.0) like Skylake is. Skylake also has a 45W lower TDP and a smaller process.

You can push the 5820K to higher frequencies. At least, there is no useless integrated graphics part in it. You do not pay for transistors that you will hardly ever use.

For most users, I bet there is no significant difference at all with these more features. More useless SATA ports, PCIE 3.0, double DIMMs - all mostly useless paper features.

Skylake looks like a decent upgrade from my Phenom II, but it still does everything that I need it to do. Image editing is starting to feel a bit slow, but otherwise no issues, even in Witcher 3 I was GPU-bound. Maybe next year with Skylake's successor and Zen.

I think i'm going to take the plunge, my 8350 @ 4.6ghz is starting to bore me....that and the fact that AMD chipsets dont support TRIM on SSDs in Raid 0.
Now that games are finally starting to load the processor's cores you find the chip boring?

No for me - there is little to no improvement over an i7-4790k - so not worth the new processor, DDR4, and motherboard (easily $600-1000).
Pretty happy with my Vietnam 4.8-4.9ghz 4790k at the moment too:

Sounds like we won't necessarily have to upgrade our DX11+ graphics cards either to make use of DX12 as long as you have Windows 10.

So, we're looking at about half a dozen different sites who've actually performed reviews. From all these sites, one thing is painfully clear; everybody's been shuffling their feet since Sandybridge.

Site after site, review after review, the story goes back to Sandybridge. IB and Haswell increased IPC, but overclocked for crap. Skylake finally brings decent overclocking (really, FIVR was an expecially pernicious bit of stupidity). DDR4, and all the new connectivity. Of course, we're still limited to barely enough PCI-e lanes and a PCH connection that isn't nearly wide enough to cover all the data it can supposedly transfer (do the math, and you find if everything was maxed out from the connectivity side the DMI pipeline would be oversaturated).

Again, 5.7% generational increases (on average), with a greater focus on iGPU, is unimpressive. In eight months when Skylake-e comes out we'll see about upgrading. As yet, the loss from going SB-e to Skylake makes me say no thanks. Of course at that point SB-e will be nearly five years old, and the regular upgrade cycle should demand replacement.

Anyone taking bets of the 6820 processor? I'm thinking they'll do the 6 cores and full PCI-e this time, but bump the 6930k and 6990X (or whatever the relative numbering scheme they choose) up to 8 cores each. If they did that, I'd gladly move from SB-e. If it's still 6-6-8 I'd be less than enthusiastic about Intel offering something genuinely worth the upgrade price. For reference, I'm on a 3930k now.

I will upgrade to the non-K model once they are available, since my impression is that they have little no no added value over the standard model if you are not going to overclock it (would be glad if someone would point other differences)?

Generally I am still happy with my core i7-920 which satisfys my gaming needs, however I'd like to upgrade to DDR4 as well as SATA3 and USB 3.0, so upgrading mostly because of those things and not the CPU itself.

You do realize that Skylake introduces DMI 3.0 which increases bandwidth from 2GBytes/second to 4GBytes/second and that the PCH now carries a lot more PCI-E lanes. In fact the PCH carries up to 20 PCI-E lanes, some are shared with parts of the PCH but, it's a long cry from the 8 shared it used to have. They're also 3.0 lanes, not 2.0.

I agree though, I don't plan on replacing my 3820 for anything other than a 4930k if I do upgrade.

So, we're looking at about half a dozen different sites who've actually performed reviews. From all these sites, one thing is painfully clear; everybody's been shuffling their feet since Sandybridge.

Exactly!
BTW: Thanks for writing posts for me. ;)

I'm also on 3930K for a while now and am eagerly awaiting 8-12 core 6960X (or whatever it might be called then).

Regarding core-count: The current-gen HEDT chips based on Haswell-E are in fact already 8-core/6-core CPUs. So I would be really surprised (and also very disappointed) to see a 6-core chip as the new highend with Skylake-E again. It has to be at least 8-core, though I wouldn't mind a 12-core version.
6960X -> 12-core full-blown Skylake-E, 6930K -> 8-core high-end and 6820K -> 6-core or 8-core seems reasonable.
