EVGA 500W for a G3258 PC - Sufficient for OCing?

Hey guys. I'm thinking about getting a basic EVGA 500W power supply for a G3258 + GTX 960 build. I want to overclock the CPU as much as I can. JonnyGuru did a review on it and seemed to be impressed given its $40 price point. Anyone have any experience with it? Do you think it would hamper my OC on the G3258 at all? Just want to keep the costs down as much as I can within reason.

Just noticed the new article here on the $800 build recommends it with an R9 290! I'm guessing it can handle a G3258 overclocked and a GTX 960!

I run my 3258 @4.2 with a 7950hd @1ghz on a seasonic gold 450w, the fan barely ever spins up while gaming with 2 hdd's and 5 120 fans. Just beware that a lot of 3258 setups are having major problems on win 10 with non z97 motherboards even at stock clocks as well as having issues with earlier versions of windows on their recent updates, (I had to disable updates myself, the 2 most recent ones have caused me problems OC'ing on a b85 board)

The motherboard is a Z87 MSI that I've already flashed for Haswell Refresh so I think I'll be O.K. For Windows 10. Thanks for the positive responses everyone.

EVGA PSUs get two thumbs up from me, every one of them. To me they're like the new old Corsair. I'd run an i7 and R9 290 on the 500W without a second thought.

VX450, VX550, TX650. Mm-mm good.

Why not step up for the Evga 500 bronze? It is much better from Jonnyguru reviews it is just about $8 or $10 more. I help someone with G3258 build that power supply.

Edit: Oh just saw you have bought it. You cannot go wrong with cheaper evga power supply they just work. I would say they are even better than higher end gold or platinum models! I got an overkill Evga Psu and that malfunction on me. A bad experience which makes me turn away from Evga high end power supplies

I was going to get the Bronze, but couldn't find it below $50. Had an Amazon gift card balance and they're out of that model at the moment for Prime delivery. It'll be here on Sunday (they deliver weekends now!), so I can get finish it as soon as it comes.

Its working fine guys. Quality is better than what I was expecting for $40. For a single midrange GPU budget build I honestly don't know why one would need anything better.

No one said "high quality" when describing this power supply. "Two thumbs up" , "fine", "good", "decent enough" - those were about the only adjectives being used. For $39.99 your last sentence is about all anyone expects or is looking for. Regardless, when someone uses them in dozens of builds without a failure (as Kursah said) I think that speaks of "quality" if not high quality.

My point was that because someone has used dozens of PSU's The same brand and it doesn't have Failured It doesn't means that it's a good PSU, it just mean it works, a Psu could fail today, tomorrow or in 5 years, it doesn't matter brand or if it's cheap or expensive, A good PSU is the one that last Until the day that i decide to replace it

I have a SeaSonic X560 gold and a Cooler Master V650 gold in my other two PCs. For a cheap build like this the EVGA seems to fit the bill. I didn't want to spend a larger sum of money on components for a $69 CPU. Most are trying to get by as cheaply as they can so as not to negate the budget aspect of the G3258. Things like the EVGA 500W fit the bill there.

Hell, for a G3258 I'd have slapped in a used Seasonic for $20 on Ebay with a dual molex to PCI-E adapter for that GTX 960! If anything you went above and beyond the call

Pretty much applies to any hardware. The best you usually can do it try to gather anecdotal opinions and evidence and try to make a somewhat educated guess. Even then its a crap shoot and you'll get a failure once in awhile (my ASUS Z97-A had the onboard Intel LAN die a few weeks ago never mind its a well regarded motherboard).
