I know, I have only done the first few main story quests and a couple of side/contracts. Before heading to Skellige I decided to ditch all the ?'s on Velen and it took so long I forgot what was happening in the story lol

You'll have more opportunity to revisit Velen. There were so many lengthy side quests I never felt rushed to follow the main quest. I always wanted to find out what else there was!

Anyway, that's a great example of the topic. Is the game finished when you complete main quest or when you do every single thing you can do? I contend in alot of RPG's you didn't really finish the game if all you did was the main quest.

I voted 40%

Most games just aren't as good as I thought they would be and I quickly lose interest. Then there are the really special games that I play through to the end and sometimes play through a second time.
Also there are loads of game that I start or even get close to the end but life gets in the way and before I know it I've lost interest to go back to it. And another one is this; Too many games release around the same time and I end up dropping one for another or dropping many for one.

I also buy games that I have never even installed yet. I have a couple hundred games easily and I bet I have around 100+ that I have not even tried. (Damn those STEAM sales!)

Right now 95% of my gaming time is spent with Witcher 3 and I have over 115 hours into it so far and only just today rescued Dandelion.

Those are really old games that require rebooting the console to get back to the menu.
Not those lol, I mean open world games that after finishing the story line you are left in the open world to continue playing, and the story line makes 50% of completeness as the game calculates it ... that's why I was talking about GTA5 as an example

I love games that do that. GTA V is a great example as you stated. So is Skyrim and Fallout.

I hope Witcher 3 does this too.

I think out of all the games I played in my life, I finished two. The original UFO Enemy Unknown and Elder Scrolls Arena. Basically, I don't like the idea of finishing a game because I like to keep playing it. I had probably played hundreds of hours of Dungeon Master and kept coming back to it until maybe 2005 or later, but I never wanted to finish it.
Also, some games are just flat out impossible for me. Like Prince of Persia, where I couldn't progress even through level 3 :D

This is a pretty interesting discussion. When is a game finished?

In my book, I have 'played a game' or 'finished' a game when I have mastered its mechanics. When I can sit down and require zero thought or real effort at playing a game, I feel I have mastered its mechanics. For some games this happens pretty quickly and others take a LONG time to get there. It's not about finishing a race in a racing game (or ending first), it's about getting under the game's skin. After that, the only real achievement in said game is a time investment, and I don't see much merit or value in that unless I really, REALLY love the game.

With the above in mind: I finished World of Warcraft vanilla and TBC - I have completed all the content in there, including every raid and boss battle. I mastered all the mechanics of all those fights, hell I could dream them, today.
I also finished Guild Wars 2 vanilla until the Fractals were introduced, going by the same principle.

You see even for an MMO, after you have mastered all mechanics and fights, there is nothing new to see apart from PvP and some items and other stuff on the side. The mindless farm then commences and repetitiveness sets in. I consider that finished.

This idea of mastering mechanics works great for me. Games that focus heavily on narrative and then offer a shitty storyline that lacks quality, I can master the mechanics of the game and be done with it. I do this, if the narrative of a game isn't to my liking I just drop it. I've dropped many games just short of the final mission like this too, but I do tend to pick them up again *much* later, starting a new game entirely and doing everything right that time. I did this with Metro 2033, played 3/4th of the game, dropped it, and finally finished it when Redux got released.

I'm not an achievement/trophy/100% hunter at all, I think that is a massive waste of time. It falls right in line with mindless zerging or farming for me - boring, repetitive, button mash-fests. This isn't always bad, but after a bunch of MMO's I think I am completely past that unless the farming itself is great fun.

Going by my own metric I have finished about 85% of the games I bought. Going by the accepted metric of finishing storylines / main campaigns, I probably finished about 10%. The Witcher 3 has also fallen into my dark pit of unfinished narratives, but I am so tired of the simple combat mechanics and I've seen every zone in the game.

I play games with replay value in general. If it has an end I usually don't finish it.

I never finish anyth

This is what I first remembered from someone's signature. XD

I found out that my biggest Achilles heel are open world games. While they are intriguing and massive, they tend to keep me busy for quite a while exploring caves, villages and cities, I tend to wander around and explore and just never really bother to finish the main story line. The Elder Scroll games ALL suffer from this incurable syndrome. And when I do want to continue playing them after months or even years, I get blocked by some stupid bug that prevents me from continuing. This happened with Skyrim and after spending tons of hours playing it, I have no wish to play it all over again. So, it's again left unfinished.

The games I like the most are those which are linear, but give several alternate paths to complete a task or mission. Deus Ex games for example. They are open enough to give you great freedom of choice making, but linear enough to constantly keep on pushing your forward. GTA games have exactly the same problem. So many things to do you forget about the red line and then you just get bored and forget about it. That's why I don't like open world sandbox games in general. I like multiple options, but they have to be a part of a main story line. Striking a perfect balance between openness and linear progression is the key for making an interesting game with huge replay value and story that never lets you go until you finish it and replay it several more times later. That's why Deus Ex and System Shock 2 games are so highly praised by me but not so much GTA and Skyrim series even though I love some aspects of those games.

It is hard to "finish" games like Skyrim or GTA 5. I usually try and complete the main story arc. Most of the games I buy on Steam sale I rarely finish.

I usually finish most of the games I buy but there are plenty that earned the "nope" 5 minutes in. So I'm in the 60-70% range now. I try and go by the rule "you must finish all existing non 'nope' games prior to buying any new games"

it seems to work pretty well. Occasionally I'll have to go on a game finishing binge in early december but that's become pretty fun actually.

Can't answer this question. I replay all my games. Actually all games I have on Wii and PSP are my favorite games because I get rid of games I don't care about.
I'm perfectionist so 100% completion for me means:

everything's explored
all secrets found by my own (never cared for walkthroughs, speedruns, reviews and all that junk)
all difficulties are clear with all characters with every possible ending

which kinda is impossible for open world games, at least you can't physically complete these games:

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
Kingdom Hearts Recoded
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
LittleBigPlanet
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
The Last Story
Dead Space: Extraction (challenge mode)

And I think I haven't tried all endings in Resident Evil 2 (Leon, HUNK, Sherry) all Ada's assignments in Resident Evil 4, mercenaries in Resident Evil 5.
I'm yet to see the bad ending in Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes, bonus ending in Metroid Prime Trilogy, bad ending in Metroid Prime Hunters, haven't completed hardest difficulty in GoldenEye. Long story short: there's long way to go.

The problem that I have is that I'm scared to try anything new cause I'm afraid it's going to suck. I usually stick to series' that I know. I have given up trying to like RPG games cause I can never get into them. I've read all the threads here about Skyrim for example and how much everybody loves it. So I think I will, but nope. I wish I could give those games away.

Yeah I use to be like that but thank the Lord for Steam it makes buying easy with other peoples reply's also they give you the tips and in game images without the searching... not like Buying from a game stores or Origin, as they put no effect into promoting the games really and expect you to know what you want before you buy from them, also I keep to a rule if its over 10 bucks... your paying to much lots of great games out there for cheap, only new games on my list is Rainbow 6 that will come out in a few months, and the New Star Wars Battle field in a month, But I have played 80% of all my games to the end and if I could not finish them it was because I rage ended or the game did not play well with my system at the time, but every upgrade I do I go back to them games and try again.

I've been on a buying spree these last couple of Steam sales (past 2 years). Only now have I started to play these games because of the free time I finally have. Before I started playing lots of games this summer, my % was more like 40-50, now its like 60-80. Feels good to get sh!t done :D

I'm playing the remade Gauntlet game now and it's a pretty fun hack n slash game. Just like I remember Gauntlet Legends was in the old-school arcade days....ahhhh the memories!! :)
