Asus ROG GX700 liquid cooled laptop series

"The big announcement from ASUS though is a completely new gaming laptop called the GX700 series. This is a new flagship gaming laptop from the company and they have tried to pack in quite a few unique features to differentiate from the competition. Someone can correct me if I am mistaken here, but I believe this is the first modern gaming laptop to be offered with a closed loop liquid cooling system. We have seen what a dramatic difference this can make under load on the recently launched AMD Fury X GPU, and ASUS is just teasing us for the moment and will release more details about this later. It will feature a 3840x2160 17.3-inch display, and a yet to be determined GeForce GTX graphics system. The GX700 will feature the mobile K-series Skylake processors much like the G752 and will therefore support overclocking. With the water cooling system, this could make for a pretty powerful laptop. The GX700 will be released in Q4 as well but the price is not final yet."

So at one point is this thing portable? Maybe its detachable?

I am all for a liquid cooled laptop, but come on guys the package for a laptop still has to be reasonably portable otherwise it might as well be a small desktop. I was hoping it was going to be built into the base with some thin radiator or something and just be a huge 17/18inch laptop.

It is detachable, the radiator and fan unit at the back is a sort of docking station.

I agree. A laptop is the top of someone's lap. Unless sitting on a pad, no notebook or similar type computer should sit on a lap.

If this fancy new "notebook" case cannot be opened by a "normal user" as easily as a PC for proper cleaning, then I don't want it. IMO, unless a notebook can easily be cleaned of heat trapping dust that WILL get sucked in over time, then it is NOT a "good" gaming notebook, or a "desktop replacement".

And 8.95 - 9.61 pounds! And not sure that tonnage includes the liquid cooling docking station that requires its own power supply! You need a suitcase with wheels to lug this thing around. Can you say Osborne computer?

I would much rather have a PC, with a full sized keyboard and mouse and multiple large widescreen monitors.

The whole point for the creation of notebooks was to have a "portable" computer for the road warrior, working person or student who needs to take his or her computer with them as they travel on business trips, or back and forth to work and school. So it is pretty much useless for the core demographics of notebook users.

It is:

Very heavy,
4 separate parts to lug around (notebook, cooler, 2 power supplies - 5 counting its suitcase ),
Expensive with a "starting" price of $1499,
Tiny 17" monitor,
Cramped keyboard,
Touchpad - no mouse,
Extremely limited, if any, future upgrade possibilities,
Expensive to repair,
And like all "portable" devices, they often grow feet.​

Other than that, it's a fine computer.

My mistake. If you are correct, and I bet you are pretty close, that makes it even less attractive, IMO.

For $2500USD, you can build a much nicer PC gaming rig that will provide years of upgrade possibilities - not to mention a nice 24" (or larger) monitor, gaming keyboard and mouse.

This is clearly for a very small niche market of deep-pocketed buyers who simply want gaming notebook bragging rights. Not that that is necessarily wrong or bad, but it just seems to me a notebook should serve some practical value too, and I don't see it in that big, heavy thing, even if technically luggable.
