First off, a game is never yours, just the right to play it after buying a copy or key of it, big difference.

Actually, games from GOG ARE always yours. No DRM. You download the game to your hard drive and never check in with anyone online, ever.

If you think you own games you merely buy a key to play, you're sadly mistaken.

There is no game key. You download all the game files and install to your hard drive. I also keep all the install files separate. I could go offline tomorrow forever, and never lose the ability to play games from them, because there is no check in, and no key to activate.

This also holds for when publishers cancel deals with GOG: the game is still yours, its DRM-free status never changes.

An old school guy like yourself who is not too much older than me must certainly remember what those days were like before DRM and before online game platforms like Steam and Origin and U-play infected the masses making them think they HAD to use them to play a game.

It doesn't matter whether they do it by key or other account info, you still don't actually OWN the game. Have you never learned that about software? It's IP they have sole ownership of. You only have right to play it.

And what you're talking about aren't special perks that others don't offer, and you're paying WAY too much for it.

I KNOW I don't own the IP, silly. But games sold from them are never taken from me, and nor do they have the means to prevent me from playing them once I download the install files, ever. Exactly who else is doing that? No one! Games either have DRM on physical copies (including/especially older games from early to mid 2000's) or require "checking in" with a game platform.

LOL, yet you're the one that insisted most toeing the line for the pubs have no choice on price.

I'm about a inch away from putting you back on my IL at this point. You really like to be pretentious don't you?
Before bashing others, perhaps present some facts for your argument like others have. You seem to be arguing for argument's sake.

The first sentence WAS on point. He at first made it sound like sites HAVE to adhere to a pub set price, and in that post I responded to said there is no suggested price just retail price. And the term "retail price" doesn't even fit since he's only stressing Digital Sales every time he comments on it.

LOL, I'm not the one spewing or listening to psycho babel. TPU is a bit too stuffy and cliquish for it's own good many times, and thus I will start using that IL once again. You've forced my hand.

At least W1zz made it easy. All one need do is click on the profile name and the option is right there. :)

Like I said, Ford is one pretentious mofo, and I'm not the only one that has said such things about him. I'm fine with not having to read his drivel, or see his passive aggressive pics, which is something btw you ignored in singling me out.

whatever this thread turned into... i just want to point out that GMG routinely has unusual sales on NEW titles, like 40% off mad max before & during its release (i think hotrandomkeys also did it), they also have the VIP section, so i'm thinking some of GMG's sales are at a loss so they can get new customers

I don't think it is at a loss but they do have a rewards program that is unique to GMG as far as I know. For new titles, GMG is probably the cheapest, non-gray market website due to those promotions.

I have problems with their website (not IE11 compatible last I check...Bundle Stars isn't either) and frequently have problems with orders though (e.g. Farming Simulator 2011 was supposed to have platinum content but it refused to install/take it--GMG refunded the money) so I tend not to do business with GMG. They aren't bad..

I do not get the whole grey market thing. Why these sites get so much hate all over the internet?
I am looking for a place to buy games, as prices on Steam are just ridiculous. Is there any other than GMG (still expensive) site that has cool prices and is not risky?

Why these sites get so much hate all over the internet?

Because they use stolen credit cards/bank details and abuse currency discrepancies in various countries in order to pay substantially less for games. You might hate some of the big AAA publishers and think they don't deserve the extra profit, but you know, developers deserve to get paid for their work, and people have the right to not have their money stolen.

That's why they get so much hate.

On that note, I don't think the average person understands the YEARS of development on a game, and with AAA publishers, the huge staff (who must be paid good wages if a studio wants to keep them and hopefully put out a great product), working against future income for those years, the licensing fees, attorneys, advertisement, etc, etc, etc.

For what goes into most good games, I find it incredible the prices haven't increased at an exponential pace.

I think I own my GOG games too. Steam and Origin can ban my entire account if they want to but if GOG banned my account for some reason I wouldn't lose my games that I bought there. If I can buy something that I can always keep and use and no one else has any control over it then it feels like I own it to me.

If they did that, wouldn't they be sued and closed down?

They operate out of China, usually, making that near impossible.

I have spent some time on the internet reading about these "grey market" sites. I have visited one of them and even purchased a game there. Everything seems fine. I have paid (like waaaay less than I would on Steam) and got the key on my email couple of minutes later. Used the key in Steam and downloaded without troubles. Now I am a happy owner of Mortal Kombat X for 1/6 of the Steam price.

Isn't the whole price difference based on the fact that some time ago Steam was the only place to buy digital games and they still think that they own the market and can sell for whatever they want? Even boxed retail version of the MKX costs less than on Steam, which is just weird, as the box and the disc should increase the price over the digital product.

Do you have any idea how that "one of them" acquired that key? If you can't trace it all of the way back to the publisher, therein lies the problem. It could have originally been purchased using stolen money (which means you helped them launder that money), it could have been given away free for whatever reason (e.g. a press license that was never redeemed and should have been returned to the publisher), or it could have been given away free as a promotion for something else (e.g. a graphics card). In the first case, the whole gray market is facilitating illegal activity; in the latter cases, the license was transferred which is a) illegal and b) whomever sold it is profiting while the publisher gets none.

Retail software follows the laws of normal retail products. They respond to supply and demand. Digital software has infinite supply so instead of demand being responsive which forces the price to adjust, demand is controlled through pricing. This is why sales at digital stores are often frequent and often deep. It obeys the laws of eCommerce (visibility, visibility, visibility) more than anything else.

IL = Ignore List.

I'm going to remind people threatening to put someone on their ignore list, or attempting to shame them by saying "I'M IGNORING YOU" is incredibly childish.

Seems like it would just make it harder to follow the flow of conversation in a thread by putting people on ignore anyway. I use the low tech method if someone is being offensive. I scroll past their posts. :)

Just looking for the best deal for my battlefield hardline game.
It came with no key
Sounds like a pirate copy. Just log on using the Origin client and buy it direct through that. Amazon is also a safe buy. Just make sure it's not a marketplace seller. Buying from other third parties tends to be a bit iffy, especially if cheap and could result in a revoked key with no comeback.

Do you have any idea how that "one of them" acquired that key? If you can't trace it all of the way back to the publisher, therein lies the problem.

But it is not my responsibility to trace the key. If the publisher has a problem with a marketplace (because that is what the website I purchased from calls itself) than it should report it or claim that it is unauthorized. I have not seen such information about Kinguin (because that's where I purchased MKX - some time googling and nice page layout convinced me to go with them), so I don't have any reason not to purchase from them.

Would you happily purchase a gun from a guy's car trunk? After all, it's hardly your responsibility to trace the paper trail...

Ignorance is bliss.
