Intel Admits Marginalizing Desktop PC Market Was A Mistake

Yup, it was a mistake all right.

Last year, and for the first time, Intel decided to skip the traditional desktop market with its latest chips and instead use a stop-gap refresh of older chips – Haswell Refresh / Devil’s Canyon – to address that market segment. This hurt the company’s financials as the company’s own Kirk Skaugen admitted during this year’s Citi Global Technology Conference.

It's the point of advancement. Intel should *NEVER* neglect and marginalize the Desktop PC Market because it will *NEVER* shrink, rather it will grow and that the consumer market is literally a sandbox for the manufacturers. Portable devices will never meet the demands of the PC market, even when quantum computing becomes more stable and minimized for the home user.

Considering Kaby Lake is just filler I doubt it. Zen would have to be awesome for them to scrap those plans

Kaby Lake has eDRAM. That IPC with Skylake's overclocking? That's one hell of a filler.

Eh, companies and news sites constantly whining how PC segment is dead and how is declining and yet people still buy high end systems to be placed on a desktop. Tablets and all that crap is just a gimmick stuff, something trendy everyone had to have and they now lay around in drawers. I too have a tablet, full Windows one. And I only use it as something that suplements my PC, not as a replacement. And my tablet is faster than 95% of tablets in the market...

Honestly, the haswell-refresh had better performance in all areas against broadwell. They probably would have made less money sending out broadwell than sending out the haswell-refresh. Even if they sold more, the R&D and manufacturing processes would have eaten up any extra money they would have made, and then some. Stated in the article.

The biggest problem with that article is Intel never admits that they pulled a MS. They're stupidly trying to force feed desktop gamers crappy onboard graphics, and now even going back to higher latency MB mounted memory controllers.

It reminds me a lot of MS ignoring tons of desktop users whom didn't want to deal with the stupid tablet tiles on their stationary PCs. We often bash AMD for bad business practices, but Intel should know better.

This is not merely matter of them being complacent about AMD's lack of competition in utilizing refreshes in place of new architecture. There's actually some very poor design choices being made, even on new architecture.

Moore's Law indeed, anything that can happen, will happen, like AMD coming back to CPU prominence if Intel dare get too complacent.

This seems to be a ongoing trend with all big companies lately. It's like they want to force what they want on you, And to heck with what you want. And when they get negative feedback they always come back with really weird answers that never pertain to anything, Almost like they are trying to pull off some kind of social engineering LOL.

Yup, like they're saying, "We'll tell you how technology is supposed to trickle out, and you'll learn to like it".

They need to stop with the brainwash. Most tech consumers know what they want and don't want. If I wanted an APU I'd buy a cheap laptop or console. I don't need that crap with a decent stand alone GPU.

The funny thing is, they're also trying to convince themselves they're good at integrated graphics, but they really aren't. The only thing Intel have going for them lately besides their cash cow x86 licensing is past model CPUs (while they still last) and a decent new chipset in Z170. The latter of which many don't feel is enough incentive on it's own to change platforms.
