But it is not my responsibility to trace the key. If the publisher has a problem with a marketplace (because that is what the website I purchased from calls itself) than it should report it or claim that it is unauthorized. I have not seen such information about Kinguin (because that's where I purchased MKX - some time googling and nice page layout convinced me to go with them), so I don't have any reason not to purchase from them.

Youre likely to find happening to you what frequently happens to alot of people: Your key will one day be revoked by Steam, as an illegal key. You might be lucky, you might not.

I follow this philosophy when purchasing any goods: You get what you pay for.

This article focuses on Kinguin. Even Polygon couldn't trace where the key came from or rather, it could have come from three places (Humble Bundle, press key, free key offered with purchase of game). Gray market is "gray" for a reason: it isn't white (100% legitimate and safe) and it isn't black (100% illegal and liable to be te), it's somewhere in between.

I have spent some time on the internet reading about these "grey market" sites. I have visited one of them and even purchased a game there. Everything seems fine. I have paid (like waaaay less than I would on Steam) and got the key on my email couple of minutes later. Used the key in Steam and downloaded without troubles. Now I am a happy owner of Mortal Kombat X for 1/6 of the Steam price.

Isn't the whole price difference based on the fact that some time ago Steam was the only place to buy digital games and they still think that they own the market and can sell for whatever they want? Even boxed retail version of the MKX costs less than on Steam, which is just weird, as the box and the disc should increase the price over the digital product.
I actually won a "Humble Bundle" game, registered on the site, got the code, went to steam, downloaded the game, played game for 2 weeks, then Steam turned round and denied me access to the game saying it was obtained illegally or words to that effect.

My point being...... don't think because you are playing the game now that all is well, I am sure there are lots that work out just fine though, let's hope yours is one of them.

guy's car trunk

Well that is completely different situation. You know that the gun from the guy's car trunk is illegal. However, buying gun in a gun store (no matter how small, no matter who owns it) does not make me want to check where he has it from. He hes the shop, he has a license to have the shop - I'm good. If the shop was illegal it would be closed.

Same goes for the websites - they operate, developers do not give official statements not to buy from them, then I guess it must be ok. As for them being registered in China and purchasing keys with stolen credit cards - does Chinese law allow to steal credit cards? I think not. So IF the companies would really do it - they would be closed no matter the country they are located in.

I'm not so sure the Chinese government would care very much unless the stolen credit cards were stolen from Chinese citizens. The Chinese steal tech and ignore patents. MS has even given up on charging for Windows in China. Almost all Chinese pirate Windows. They do whatever they want. Last year a Chinese company got caught selling fake video cards on New Egg's Marketplace.

Green Man Gaming.
This, and GOG and Humble.

Yup. If you use a "Gray" site you might as well just pirate it. Less chance of it being blocked later.

Like I said if you don't want to use Steam or Origin then use Green Man, GOG or Humble.

Most states permit that...

...so no, you don't.

Uh, yeah they do. In this case, the publisher of Mortal Kombat X, Warner Bros., files lawsuits against sellers on Amazon.com. Granted that was for videos and not games but when asked to comment about the gray market, they unanimously dislike it.

Oh please. You can buy a gun from anyone you like in the US. If @Tatty_One comes to Florida from the UK and says to me "You got any guns for sale" and I have one in my car I can sell it to him COMPLETLY LEGALLY.

Whats illegal if you buy a gun from a store with the sole purpose to resell it for profit/to a felon. That makes you a "strawman" buyer and the only people who can do that is the US government when they sell to the Mexican cartels........but that's for another thread.

Anyway a guy down the street from me used to sell them in his yard sale. Seriously its not a big deal.

That's really odd man. Did you contact Humble? They are normally pretty good at sorting out these things. Only guess is whoever you won it from wasn't on the legitimate side of dispersing the keys OR Humble made a mistake.

It was a giveaway so I was grateful in any case, I have absolutely no doubts that particular member obtained it legitimately, your probably right about Humble making a mistake, at the time I thought (perhaps wrongly) that the way it works possibly with steam is that you enter the key, it allows you to download but after that maybe Steam supplies the used key to the games developer for clarification/approval and may have been rejected at that point, dunno really how these things work.

All was well in the end as another kind soul gave me a key that allowed me to go back into steam and carry on where I left off.

Just to be clear I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. I was just laying out the variables. Humble probably made a mistake. If that's the case they in my experience have been pretty quick to sort things out. Point was they are a legitimate site and from my experience can be trusted. They are in no way a "Gray" site.

Believe me if I think something isn't legit I wont touch it with a 10 foot poll. Its not that I have a high horse. I have other reasons. lol

I remember when that happened here. That happened because the purchase was legitimate through Humble Bundle, but due to other fraudulent charges around the same time on the individual's payment source, all charges were disputed and marked as fraud, including those at HB. Therefore the keys obtained in HB were revoked due to that issue, and Steam stole your game back.

So thing is, on Steam (and presumably other digital distribs), if they catch you with a key that was bad or a disputed purchase, they remove the game. :(
