I have a brand new XPSC R9 290X block with back plate. I got it for my R9 290 when I planned to add my third 290 to my system, but my plans changed. I paid originally $140 for the block and $25 for the back plate. Got both from performance pcs, PM me if you are interested, I'd be willing to sell $130 shipped.

Not worth cooling the 290Xs with water I read. I could be wrong.

if you have one, then no. not worth it. same goes for pretty much any modern GPU. even you buy parts used, go cheap and buy the chinese no-name barb fittings, use home depot tubing, etc, it will still run you $250+ for the custom loop. unless you absolutely MUST have a dead silent computer even when at 100% load there is no way to justify the cost. but if you go SLI or CF then i think watercooling helps a lot. i tried figuring out a way around it, but nothing helped.

i have a pair of heavily OCed GTX 980 Ti cards. BIOS modded to allow 115% power target. individually they worked great up to 1450 MHz max boost. sometimes even pushed 1500-1525 MHz for a while before throttling back to 1450 ish. but when these monsters were working together and so close to each other, they started cooking one another. when the load got really heavy, the top card got so hot from sucking in the heat from the back plate of the lower card that it had to throttle down all the way down to 1000MHz just to stay under 85*C.

with my new water loop, everything stays under 60*C and both cards hit 1475-1525MHz max boost (depending on scenario) without a problem.

Thank you guys,

Its mainly because i have two cards, a 295x2 and a 290x which both generate a lot of heat.

Stock 290x cooler, yes very much worth it. No more thermal throttling for me ;)
