So, if I'm reading that disclaimer at the bottom right this is a fan created project, completely without support from CBS.

Interesting, a decent use of the Oculus, but still too uncanny valley to not seem creepy. On the flip side, somebody put some love into the project. It genuinely looks better than most of the AAA games we've gotten in the past few years.

It'd be a shame for CBS to torpedo it.

Edit:

Most of the Star Trek AAA games. Missed that very substantial distinction.

There was an Oculus demo of the Enterprise-D engineering; I wonder if this is the same folks behind this. I did notice the oculus logo at the end of the vid....

from their website:
Enterprise3dproject.com said:
Main Project Goal:
To create the entirety of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D in the Unreal Game Engine. The Enterprise would serve first and foremost as a virtual museum. Every deck and room can be explored. Fans would be able to visit engineering via the turbolift, or walk from Deck 36 to Deck 5 to see the Arboretum. What does Worf’s quarters look like? What about the large forward windows on Deck 3? What kind of communal areas exist on the ship? Malls? Markets? Gardens? All these questions will be answered.

Other Potential Phases:
  • A Populated ship.
    • Federation citizens and Starfleet would be walking around the ship, living in it, working in it. The Enterprise will feel alive with activity, as it did in the show.
  • Other locations
    • Different Planetary Systems
    • External exploration
      • Starfleet Headquarters
      • Deep Space Nine
  • Online Play with other Trek Fans
    • Have own quarters
    • Missions
      • Internal and external missions in a variety of categories
        • Repair / Engineering tasks
        • Fight off alien invasion
        • Save Counselor Troi from Alien Mind takeover
        • Derelict spaceship exploration
        • Total ship failure (Disaster episode)
    • Bridge Commander Mode
    • Take on various challenges from the bridge
Seems like they're pretty ambitious. If even half of their "potentaial" additions come to be, it'll be pretty schweet.

Elite Force 3, anyone? :)

You know, I think this might actually look better than in the TV program and yes, it's unofficial which might mean that it gets nuked by some retarded exec. Anyway, Star Trek is owned by Paramount, so I don't know where CBS comes in?

Owns the rights to the ST-TNG TV series AFAIK. The rights for the various ST properties are split up between Paramount and CBS; sales, merchandising, new properties etc is all tangled up between at least those two.

So, a few more answers. People seem to not want to do any background research.

1) CBS has the rights to Star Trek. They parlay those rights to Paramount for film, and various places for books (though Pocket Books seems to be the uniform publisher).
2) The project is currently a one man operation.
3) The project has a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2363815&ty=h
4) The eventual goal is 40 levels. Currently they've got 2 levels. The 40 level number was bastardized from surrounding media, and there are a lot of caveats that the project website explores in depth: http://www.enterprise3dproject.com/

5) Oculus support seems to be a part of this because of the whole Unreal Engine integration.
6) There is no plan to make this a game. Think museum piece, with maybe a population of characters given enough time and resources.
7) As per section 1, this can be torpedoed at any time. Given the effort thus far, it would be depressing. Heck this is miles ahead of the most recent Star Trek games (read: Kirk doesn't glitch out here).
8) The largest caveat is that there's no plans to release this thing. I think business savvy isn't exactly the author's forte. He's got a small ($23/mo) Patreon, and is saying that a Kickstarter might happen if the internet responds well. Unfortunately, if there's an internet response CBS will likely come in and kill the project. Not sure at the logic here, but fan projects are often more heart than head. This person seems to fit that to a T.

While I commend the demo, it's a lot like Warframe. It's nice to look at, but once you strip off the pretty exterior the inside is a collection of bubble gum, duct tape, and super glue. It works if you don't push it hard, and if you get surprisingly lucky.

Edit:
There may be some confusion about what CBS is. It's relatively fast changing of names with Viacom seems to be the source of the confusion. Basically though, CBS and Paramount are under the same umbrella, which is why Paramount does the movies.

Good lord, the history of media conglomeration makes my head hurt.

This made me cringe so hard. I pictured a nerd dad trying to be cool and just embarrassing himself while having no clue.

*shiver*

AND im a HUGE fan of Star Trek.

I giggled a lot, because I think he's quoting "Deep Space 69" ;)

Dude, what's wrong with Warframe engine wise ? *readies sidearm* ;)

Background first. I played until a couple of months ago, and started a little before Archwing. In that time I got to MR 18. If you play that game, you understand exactly how f*ed up that level of time wasting is. I needed to say that before the more inflammatory part.

Warframe sucks. It sucks because the developers have no cohesive goals, the developers release alpha and beta coding (based upon the profuse amount of bugs), the basic economics of the game are terrible (read: RNJesus), and if you've played for any amount of time you've encountered at least a few game breaking bugs. It's pretty, the basic concept is awesome, and when it works it's fun. After a long enough time playing it, you see past the pretty and realize that it's a broken Skinner box and not a game.

I compare this to Warframe because it's a mechanical failure, despite being impressive. If it succeeds it will fail, if it fails it will fail, and it really is a project being done by people with immense passion for their work.

I was just going to say myself, though it's an admirable accomplishment for a fan project, and better looking than pretty much any Star Trek game, Star Trek games have never set the bar high graphically, nor has UE, despite many claiming so. The textures, lighting and shading are noticeably inferior to what Frostbite 3 can do. Snowdrop might be even better, especially regarding physics.

Then again, you go cramming too much world detail into some engines, and performance plummets. Although I don't know if that's even worth mentioning, because UE has always been very inefficient at loading textures, assets and scripts, to the point of many games using it having stutter issues. There's more to performance than frame rates, and no engine validates that point more than UE.

I just don't like the movement with UE, to me it's like Elite Dangerous combat v's Star Citizen combat ed's far more superior.

Only reason i put up with it in Bioshock was the story, movement was terrible in that game.

Dammit, the video's been pulled due to a copyright claim by CBS. They had to ruin it, didn't they? They should encourage fan homages, not stifle them. Oh well, it was good while it lasted. :ohwell:

This is why I encourage piracy, next they will start issuing lawsuits for going to a convention dressed as a copyrighted character.

Did nobody listen?

This guy has a Patreon, with the potential for a kickstarter. Real money was changing hands here. CBS is obliged to get a take down, lest their defense of IP be demonstrably insufficient to have their IP protected. This isn't so much a screw CBS, as it is a screw our copyright system thing. The second real money changes hands CBS has to pursue him aggressively.

Screw CBS and screw the US copyright law it was a good idea at first now its just an abusive system.
Next they will be suing people for making their own halloween costumes instead of buying the official ones.

At no point did I say that I agreed with the laws. My personal opinion is that copyright lasts too long, is too encompassing, and only now serves to hurt innovation.

Be real here, if China didn't pirate IP their meteoric rise would have been impossible. They stole good ideas, bastardized them together, and manage to make things much cheaper and faster because of it. While it does hurt some people, it's objectively better than keeping absolutely everything protected, as that weasel demonstrated recently with the Daraprim 5000% price increase. Copyright needs a massive overhaul, and it needs to be shortened.

This is going to have to be the case if we're ever to get reasonably priced drugs in the US, a good Fantastic 4 movie, and destroy the copyright trolls clogging our legal system. The rest of the world is even forced to deal with our crap, because copyright is respected between governments because it's the only way we'd allow trade.

Also, seeing somebody run with the Star Trek license would be amazing. Yes, we'd get crap, but imagine Eve without the insane grind, themed for Star Trek. The license is so rich with possibility, yet it isn't being utilized because it's more profitable to just pump out old material in a new box. Jebus, I'd sit through another 10 seasons of Voyager if it meant we could have had an Enterprise season 5 (they really only hit their stride as it was cancelled). The problem is, those terrible new movies sell better than TV shows. (*grumble* doesn't understand that cold fusion doesn't create ice- F' you Abrams and your lense flare garbage *grumble*)

@lilhasselhoffer: You just hit a positive nerve with your apparent love of Star Trek: Enterprise! IMO, that was the best series, simply because it was the beginning days, and did not have all the flashy stuff. It felt very down to Earth, almost as if we suddenly had a warp-capable ship now, and filled it with all of our low-tech items we have now, that we perceive to be high-teck in our current time.

It definately got cancelled too soon!

First couple of seasons didn't know what the heck they were doing. Season three is where they decided to get those crappy story lines tied up, and figure out what plot threads actually mattered. Season 4 marked where they basically knew cancellation was coming, and they decided to throw away the crappy plot threads. Once they managed that, the show was actually interesting and fun. It was a shame that the radical shift didn't garner enough viewers to change their fate. Instead we get the JJ Abrams trash. Didn't we, as a whole, understand Abrams was full of crap when he started describing his plots as a "mystery box?" I guess not.

After a mediocre reboot, and an absolute trash second movie, he's moved on to Star Wars. I hope the mouse manages to sit him down, get the lighting correct, and squeezes a real plot out of him. If I have to have a disappointing Star Trek reboot, a piss poor episode 1-3, and a lackluster 7-9 I'm going to get a big UPS box fill it with what I believe his movies are and send it to him. If anyone has a local dairy farm I'll be taking donations.

We need somebody to take these licenses and take chances. Star Trek has disappointed since DS9 (Enterprise being the exception, but only slightly before cancellation), despite every nerd out there still loving either Trek or Wars. Isn't that insane?
