Just watched an interesting video.

According to JayzTwoCents, he can't get older AMD cards because they die from overheating.

I've heard that AMD cards overheat a lot and die more than nvidia before, so it was interesting to hear someone that deals with an insane amount of graphics cards confirm it.

stop trolling please

Yeah, whatever.

Jay has used hundreds of cards over the years.

I don't think he is just saying things to be a troll, I trust what he says is true.

Just because it is a negative statement against your beloved AMD doesn't mean it is trolling or any less true.

Video is weak sauce (only watched the intro). If AMD cards literally died form overheating, the forums (not just TPU) would be flooded with "My AMD card just burned up"

I've only heard of Nvidia cards actually die form overheating, actually catch fire in some cases. But whatevs either way. I've used a bit of AMD cards in the past, and the only cards that got HOT were the reference 290s, before the water blocks.

Nice video though, guy seems legit.

Seen a few bite the dust, but they have been from both camps (GTX 590, HD 4870, and HD 4870 X2 come to mind). The only card I've had that actually came close to dying of heat stroke was a HD 5970 ( I got a warranty replacement -which I sold unopened- when the original card started screwing up)- but like a lot of dual GPU cards, tend to a bit of a compromise at the best of times. Reference HD 4870/4890's tended to expire disproportionately- as did some GTX 280's and 275's, but non reference cards seemed fine for the most part.

Not sure about the newer series of cards though - many failures seem to be attributable to heavy mining usage.

Kind of says it all... who pushed a single card harder, the guy with one he's used daily, or the guy that has used hundreds in the same period?

This is a good point. Typically you don't burn up a gpu in a short time period unless it was particularly faulty.

I've built pcs with AMD gpus, and I've even passed on older gpus that are still running, and actually doing a lot of gaming. My old 7970 is still going strong in my bro's pc, like a champ. Can't ask for more from a 3+ year old video card.

I don't think most of us expect a video card to last 4 or 5 years. We move quite easily nowadays :)

I've alwas pushed cards hard and only one that died was HD5850 because I fiddled with a cooler (replaced it with Zalman) and something went wrong. It went blank and that was it. I've had many Radeons after that, pushed them hard as well and I sold all of them in working condition.

Not sure on desktop part, but on mobile part this is true, I work on pc shop, and the guy from service part told me that too, also the amd cards are so hard to reball/reflow compared to nvida cards, that it look like the amd did that on purpose...

back in the day (8800 series) it was the other way around. i think its more likely there are less AMD cards around in the first place, therefore less second hand ones available.

The guy with one he's used daily.

Jay uses a card for a short period and moves on.

Though from the sounds of it he can't find these cards anywhere.

That is interesting.

Jay is a sarcastic guy. He'll bash a brand for lacking a backplate. (EVGA)

He likes to poke fun, and maybe sure his AMD cards died from heat from his overclocking fetish. To each their own.

my 290 reference with custom fan profile never broke 70 celsius once, just put it on 65% fan speed 24/7 when gaming, and never had an issue. was quite loud, but eh, just crank the sound louder in headphones :D people just plug n play so much with reference coolers, and yea they do run hot then, but throw in a msi afterburner custom fan profile, and meh.

Not sure about Nvidia been about 15 years since i had one ,But for me the last 2 AMD cards i had 6970 both from Sapphire ,Were running fine until my 8 or10 year old ASUS Mother board blew a VRM choke and took one of my card`s out,Not any manufactures fault AMD,ASUS or Sapphire ,Just Sh!T happens and Hey i really got 8 or 10 years out of the board and 5,6 out of the cards ,I think i got my money`s worth don`t you ?

Really this guys needs to realize Many of us AMD users are not going to give up our cards that work ,If the 6970 i have that still runs would not be the Collector`s Edition BAD Company 2 card i would sell it to him ,But Nope sorry .

It has been a long time since overheating if i remember correctly it was my hd3870 and 9800gxt that had a faulty chip and burned. Today overheating is usually due weak or faulty cooling.

But doesnt W1zzard do the same in his reviews for a card not having a back plate? If I recall 99% of all green card reviews dont have a back plate!

Jayz2cents is alot more real then others id not rather mention right now :wtf:

People have seen most dead AMD cards because of the bitcoin mining craze where pretty much only AMD cards were used. Of course such cards die, they were never designed to grind at 100% load 24/7...

I've got no idea who that guy is, but over the years I've owned the following Radeon videocards, all of Sapphire make, in chronological order:
9600, X700, X1600, HD3850, HD5770, HD7850, and just got a R9 390 the other day.
I've been gaming steadily and all of those have been operating overclocked for about two and a half years each, which is basically the average time around which I realize it is time for an upgrade.
So far I've had: 0 dead cards; 0 underperforming cards; 0 faults during operation.
That's about all there is to it ^^

Not used many cards in my days, but since nVidia/AMD competition begun (CGA, EGA & VGA Trident or Matrox never crapped out LOL) I had only Red cards failing. Certainly not bashing AMD. It is just fact that never nVidia card died (Riva 128, 8800GTS, GTX580 and now GTX970) on me while AMD has shameful record of 3 dead out of 5 I owned. And funny thing is that 3 dead were not used for mining while 2 remaining were used before dismantling whole crypto-circus on my side.

I wonder why the numbers aren't there. Something such as "Between 200x and 200z AMD sold this many gaming cards and nVidia this many. We had a sample of Na gaming cards by AMD and Nn gaming cards by nVidia. We tested all of them in the same way, with a procedure consisting of tests T1, T2 ... Tn. After this procedure, N1 AMD cards died and N2 nVidia cards died. Given the total numbers sold and the size of the sample we tested, the likelihood of this difference being the result of chance is C%."

Otherwise, such impressionistic statements are, at best, worthless (and, at worst, disingenuous).
