Server administering!

Hi everyone.
I have some questions about a Server.

I built up this HP ProLiant G7 with 2 CPUs Xeon L5640, 32 GB ECC-RAM.

To comfort >>Ubuntu Server 14.04.3 LTS<< with a GUI (i.e. Unity) results in
VERY poor performance (... well ok - it's a fileserver, not a workstation).

Should I try another "more lightweighted" GUI (GNOME, Xfce, LXDE/Lubuntu, ...) in conjunction
with a seperate (passive) Graphics card (which ?), beeing put into the riser card
or should i administer the server completely from outside, from a remote PC
(with e.g. OpenSSH ? - would there be a comfort GUI available ?).

Use a seperate card for 3d acceleration if you are going to use a GUI

Use Gnome or XFCE

No SSH wont give you a GUI if nothing is installed.

My gateway server runs headless and I use SSH to connect into it. I administer it from the command line like a good linux admin.

Server hardware is not meant to give a good visual experience, it's not what it's designed for or meant to do. It's there to let you in, nothing more. In my opinion, the only way to administer a linux server is through the command line through SSH.

Time to get good at VIM and BASH, buddy.

Its not that confusing.

The GUI runs like trash because its not using any 3d acceleration. aquinus doesnt use a GUI he runs his via CLI through SSH because he prefers too.

If you want to run a GUI use a lite one like GNOME or XFCE If dont want it to run terrible add a GPu

I dont use a GUI If you want to its a matter of opinion. I personally use CLI. I was just answering your questions. I did not offer you an opinion.

Use minimal window managers like XFCE and i3 if you really want to go with the GUI route. I do suggest getting good at the CLI for obvious reasons.

Anything really You dont need a ton of vram because the resolution generally isnt large. PCI-E for sure if you can swing it. and low power if possible. I think the nvidia 7 series cards had some passive cooled models. You really dont need anything extravagant. Iv installed drivers in ubuntu server for both nvidia and AMD and both are equally as difficult and both can go just as smooth.

just FYI you can still run headless. just use something like freenx or vnc to open an x session. super simple.

Yeah but, performance will feel just like that graphics on the server board which is probably something like an ES1000. (Basically a Radeon 7000 from the good 'ol days.)

The OP might want more than just a GUI but responsiveness too. I just want to make it clear that the intent of administering a server isn't a smooth graphical experience in most cases.

There are rare cases when I'll tunnel X connections through SSH if I absolutely need a GUI but, I try not to do that.

If this is just a file server, have you thought about free nas?
